Inspiration
The KU Blockchain Institute (KUBI) was founded to bridge the gap between blockchain technology and real-world applications at the University of Kansas. We saw an opportunity to increase awareness, secure funding, and build strategic partnerships that would position KU as a leader in blockchain education and innovation. This competition challenged us to explore how marketing, grants, and institutional support could accelerate blockchain adoption on campus.
What it does
Our proposal outlines a multi-faceted approach to expanding blockchain at KU. Through targeted marketing strategies, grant funding proposals, and strategic collaborations with industry leaders, we aim to increase student engagement, develop educational initiatives, and integrate blockchain into KU’s existing infrastructure. By securing financial support and fostering partnerships, we are creating a sustainable foundation for blockchain growth at the university.
How we built it
We analyzed successful blockchain programs at peer institutions, researched funding opportunities, and consulted with industry professionals to shape our proposal. Our strategy includes securing grants from organizations like Ripple, developing compelling marketing campaigns to boost student participation, and identifying practical applications for blockchain at KU, such as research initiatives and university-backed pilot projects.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was balancing ambitious goals with realistic funding expectations. We had to refine our grant proposals to ensure feasibility while making a strong case for why blockchain deserves institutional and corporate investment. Additionally, conveying the value of blockchain to a broader KU audience—many of whom may be unfamiliar with its potential—required careful messaging and strategic communication.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed a structured, actionable plan that not only secures funding but also positions blockchain as a key area of innovation at KU. Our marketing strategies provide a clear roadmap for student engagement, while our funding proposals present a compelling case for investment. We are particularly proud of identifying realistic use cases for blockchain at KU, ensuring that our efforts translate into tangible impact.
What we learned
This competition reinforced the importance of storytelling in securing funding and institutional support. We learned how to craft persuasive grant proposals, tailor marketing strategies to different audiences, and align blockchain initiatives with university priorities. Additionally, we gained a deeper understanding of how to balance innovation with practicality when proposing new initiatives.
What's next for Empowering the Builders of Tomorrow
Our next steps involve executing our proposed strategies by securing partnerships, applying for grants, and launching targeted marketing campaigns. We aim to establish KU as a regional leader in blockchain education by expanding student engagement, integrating blockchain into university research initiatives, and attracting long-term industry investment. With a solid foundation in place, KU Blockchain Institute will continue to grow as a hub for blockchain innovation and thought leadership.
