Inspiration
We wanted to help those minorities who felt their status disadvantaged them and thus wanted to help them obtain opportunities to counteract that.
What it does
It is a website which provides motivational quotes of those minorities who have already succeed at their goals to encourage others who haven't yet that they too can succeed. To encourage and empower this success the website also provides a sort-able table of various opportunities, from scholarships to internships which users can also submit new possible entries for.
How we built it
We worked out a design with Figma to understand what we wanted our website to have in looks and functionality and from there we worked on Glitch in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to code our website into existence and desired functionality.
Challenges we ran into
- The images positioned next to text was a difficult design to implement which ran into at least three different errors in the process of success.
- Creating a table that is sort-able by category
- Creating a navigator bar
- Creating a fillable form
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A team of beginners with no prior knowledge of Web Development for all of whom this was our first hackathon ever was able to build a functioning website that had a navigator bar, images, forms and a sort-able table
- Creating a table (though sparse of entries) that is sort-able by each category upon clicking the category name at the header bar of the table
What we learned
- We learned how to use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create a website with images, text, tables and forms.
What's next for Empowering Minorities
For future improvements, our plan is to include a page for students to talk about their concerns related to their minority status and also give people the ability to respond to them. We would also give people connection opportunities by allowing them to post their socials or LinkedIn or etc.
