Inspiration
We wanted to create a platform that empowers women to feel safe, informed, and confident, especially in vulnerable situations. Our goal was to combine technology with empathy to provide both emotional support and practical resources.
What it does
Empowering Her offers three main features, a Mood Board that offers moments of relief through lighthearted jokes, a Resources Page with guidance, rights info, and support links, and an Emergency Safety Tool to quickly alert trusted contacts. Our AI assistant, Athena, provides compassionate support throughout.
How we built it
We built the project using React, designing the interface with real-life safety situations in mind, where users need to act quickly and without confusion. Every feature was created to be simple, fast, and accessible under stress.
Our backend and database were structured to store emergency contacts and support alert sending, always prioritizing ease of use. Throughout the process, we made decisions based on real scenarios, like walking alone at night or feeling unsafe, to ensure the solution felt practical and meaningful.
Challenges we ran into
A major challenge we faced was Another major challenge was working with the ESP32. Despite several attempts, we had difficulties getting it to connect properly to the internet, which prevented us from fully integrating the hardware with the rest of the system during the hackathon.connecting all the different pages of the application in a coherent and functional flow. Since the project was developed in a short amount of time, ensuring smooth navigation and consistent data sharing between pages required constant adjustments.
Also, another challenge was connecting all the different pages of the application in a coherent and functional flow. Since the project was developed in a short amount of time, ensuring smooth navigation and consistent data sharing between pages required constant adjustments.
On the backend side, setting up and managing the database was also challenging. We needed a way to store emergency contact numbers so messages could be sent automatically, while keeping the system simple and fast to use in emergency situations.
Related to that, a key challenge was saving user data without creating a full login system. We wanted to avoid adding friction for users who might need help urgently, so we had to think carefully about how to store information securely and efficiently without requiring authentication.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud that we were able to bring all parts of the project together and turn our initial ideas into a working system. Despite time constraints and technical difficulties, we successfully connected the frontend, backend, and core logic of the application.
We are also proud that we executed the main features we envisioned from the start, staying focused on the project’s purpose and impact. Seeing the idea evolve from a concept into a functional prototype was one of the most rewarding parts of the hackathon.
What we learned
This project pushed us out of our comfort zone and challenged us to learn new technologies and skills in order to build something we truly believed in. We faced unfamiliar problems and had to quickly adapt, research, and experiment to keep moving forward.
By putting ourselves in challenging situations, we learned how growth comes from trying, failing, and trying again. This experience showed us that stepping outside our comfort zone is essential to achieving the results we aim for, especially when developing impactful solutions.
