Inspiration
We were inspired by the KeyNote guest speaker, Nuzhat Minhaz . Her sharing experiences about being overlooked due to her being a minority inspired us to create a platform that can make women feel included in different aspects of life and share their own experiences and challenges that are overlooked.
What it does
Our website promotes inclusivity and overall wellness of women and minorities. It showcases opportunities in respective fields in the STEM industry. We also have a HER Pusheen Playground that is a whimsical and enjoyable space designed for recreation and relaxation. While it may not have a specific impact on women in particular, playgrounds, in general, can contribute to the well-being of individuals regardless of gender.
How we built it
First, we researched important ideas can promote inclusivity in women and simultaneously empower them. We split up a page of the website amongst us and we all were assigned one category of the website to tackle. We primarily used HTML and CSS to create the website.
Challenges we ran into
We constantly were challenged with the alignment of different elements on the website. Registering the domain and deploying was troublesome as well. The design of the layout of the website was difficult, in the sense that we had too many ideas that were not feasible to implement in the limited time span. Sticking to one color scheme and making the website look professional and user friendly was a challenge. We tried to make the website more user friendly, by incorporating audio as an alternative for those who need it, but we ran out of time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the fact that we were able to successfully launch our fully functioning website. We are proud that we were able to create something, despite our challenges and occasional lack of knowledge. We were able to incorporate inclusivity into our website.
What we learned
We learned that frontend development takes a lot of time and trial and error to reach a state of satisfaction with the design. We also learned how to effectively use tags to make our website easily navigable have a better layout.
What's next for EmpowerHER Perspectives
We want to add more accessible features to enhance inclusive user experience and we also want to have a blog that allows users to add their own experiences. In the future, we want to collaborate with women-led businesses to extend our website's functionality and resources and make our website reach a wider audience.
