Inspiration
Do you know, there is a country where girls are completely deprived of education? A country where no one talks about it anymore?. Where life for girls and women is getting worse and worse? That country is Afghanistan. A country where I grown up and have a short time experience of what those girls are going through right now. Seeing people of my gender is killed just because of enthusiasm and interest in education. Seeing girls are poisoned for raising their voices and asking for their rights. Seeing an Afghan girl is being wounded but still without thinking about her wounds she tries to find her university entrance exam card among the remains of an explosion inspired me to find ways to help them in a way that will not risk their health and safety. Coming to Hackathon helped me to find a team who has the same vision as me. Education is a right that every girl should have. Our mission is more than mere coding; it is a fight for justice and for the fundamental rights of every girl.
What it does
The app we envision is more than just lines of code; it's a lifeline for Afghan girls, offering access to education even in the face of adversity. It will teach English, coding, and mathematics through engaging games and activities, all offline and accessible anytime, anywhere. It's a tool of empowerment, a beacon of hope for those who have been denied the chance to learn. Together, we raise our voices in defiance, in solidarity with our Afghan sisters.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and javascript to start the development of our app. We used google slides to design the layout of our app. We found source code (https://codepen.io/kristenmay/pen/ZppNeb) that emulated what we envisioned a portion of our app to perform, and we further adjusted it to fit our app's needs: https://codepen.io/Rubina-Shaik/pen/abxzaoE.
Challenges we ran into
We all had really great ideas and big visions for our app, but we struggled to break it down and come up with something that was doable in the time given to us. We had a lack of time, lack of resources, and limited experience that prevented us from developing our app further.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of the layout and design of our app, and we believe that it would be highly useful once it is a fully functional app. We're especially proud of the progress we made this morning to create our app design in addition to a solid presentation to showcase our project. We managed to make some solid progress editing source code in a manner that worked with our project nicely.
What we learned
We learned about using Spline for designing our own t-shirts, the importance of team brainstorming, and breaking down ideas and sketching them out. We also learned how to work cohesively in a programming team (we learned a lot from our MLH representative Kari about how to assign tasks and really scale the project down to something manageable in a 24 hour Hackathon timeline) and how to work on DevPost to submit our project!
What's next for EmpowerHer
Our team wants to continue working on this mission and on the app. We are going to work on making assessments and building this app for different ages. We also want to build an organization to help Afghan girls who don't have access to education. We want to get more resources to work on the app and help from different professionals or professors.
