Inspiration
The both of us brainstormed different website ideas such as abolishing the death penalty, advocating for the environment, and determining what was recyclable or not. Ultimately, we decided to make our project about the gender wage gap. As females looking to major and work in the technology industry in the future, we decided to go with this idea because it covers a topic that directly affects us, hence making it a problem that we are particularly passionate about. While many say that gender equality has already been achieved, women still do not receive equal pay for equal work and men still dominate the workforce. We wanted to bring light to this topic and show others just how drastic the pay wage gap is, and how it has influenced all industries to participate in gender discrimination. This would allow us to support women by fighting against gender inequality in the workplace as well as fight stereotypes in which women are expected to become caregivers and housewives instead of pursuing their careers.
What it does
Our project CloseTheGap is an interactive website providing information about the gender wage gap and what we can do to close it. The website provides an interactive quiz to test your prior knowledge on the gender wage gap, displays statistics on the wage gap in different industries, supplies stories of women in different industries with significant wage gaps, and allows the user to take action in supporting the fight to close the gap. The users can take action by educating themselves with further information from different websites, signing petitions, donating money to foundations supporting the narrowing of the wage gap, and sharing the website with others.
How we built it
We built this project using HTML, CSS, and Javascript on Replit.
Challenges we ran into
We had issues creating the search bar menu for the industries. We originally wanted the menu to collapse until the search bar was clicked but we were unable to figure out how to do that. In addition, we wanted to have the code go through an image array when the user selects an industry, but we could not figure out how to do that, so we did it through the tedious way of creating a separate page for each industry and linking the page to the buttons. We also tried to create a fact generator but could not figure out what the issue was, as it would not generate a new fact after clicking the button.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
An achievement we’re proud of is creating the search bar menu for the industries. Although it did not come out exactly the way we wanted it to, we were really proud of the fact that we got the filtering portion to work. Additionally, we were really proud of the mini quiz on the home page.
What we learned
Although we had prior knowledge about the gender wage gap, as we researched more and more, we came to realize that there was much more to the causes of the wage gap than we realized. For example, we learned that motherhood and race heavily influenced the wage gap. We also learned how to create a search menu bar using HTML, CSS, and Javascript and overall, we were able to improve our coding skills and utilize our creativity.
What's next for CloseTheGap
With more time, we want to fix our fact generator and create a feature to allow the search bar menu to collapse. We also plan on adding more action items that users can take to support the fight of closing the wage gap. We also want to improve the mini quiz in the front page by not only adding more questions, but also making it so that the questions fade after being answered so users won’t click it twice.
