Inspiration
We felt that first-generation, low-income students find it difficult to navigate through financial problems and have a limited understanding of personal financial concepts such as budgeting and saving. They might feel overwhelmed by financial stress and have limited access to reliable financial information. With EmpowerFinance, our accessible and reliable resource for learning crucial financial literacy skills, our goal was to help these students navigate through financial problems, and this their overall well-being. By our platform, students would be able to gain exposure to income potential and would get support for financial decisions.
What it does
Our website helps students in every money-related task. They can take workshops from professionals to learn more about financial literacy, make use of our budgeting calculator, save money in their online piggy bank, and much more.
How we built it
We started by gathering ideas for the website, and upon finalization, we made our website using Canva. We decided on the theme colours, fonts, and graphics. We have a home screen, a search bar at the top, and all the features embedded in different pages.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we had to face was the difference in our time zones since our team had members from North America, Europe, and Asia. It was hard having a meeting at a time at which everyone would be available.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to work with such a tight deadline. And that we were able to communicate effectively without any language barriers. It was really surprising that we could work so well with people around the globe that we hadn’t met before.
What we learned
We learned the importance of accessible financial education and the value of online platforms for reaching underserved populations. We learned the impact of financial stress on mental health and well-being and that there is potential for scalable and sustainable financial literacy solutions. Also, the power of community support and peer-to-peer learning can be huge.
What's next for EmpowerFinance
We look forward to turning it into an actual project and working on it to help those in need.
