🚀 Project Story: Gebere-Link – Empowering Farmers through Digital Access
🌱 What Inspired Us
The inspiration behind Gebere-Link Software and Technology Solutions PLC came from witnessing the daily challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Ethiopia—limited access to markets, lack of transparency in pricing, and poor digital infrastructure. Growing up in a region rich in agriculture, I saw how much potential was wasted due to poor linkage between producers and consumers. I knew technology could be the bridge to fix this.
We were also inspired by the idea that digital inclusion can reduce poverty. By providing farmers with tools to manage their assets, track production, and access fair markets, we are enabling independence, sustainability, and economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
🧠 What We Learned
Building Gebere-Link was a journey full of learning:
Market Research: We studied existing systems in countries like India (e.g., eNAM) and Kenya (e.g., DigiFarm), and realized Ethiopia lacked such a centralized, farmer-centric digital system.
Tech Development: We gained hands-on experience with:
Firebase for real-time backend
Flutter for cross-platform mobile app development
Integration of SMS APIs to support offline farmers
Design Thinking: We learned how to develop user-friendly UI/UX for low-literacy users.
Financial Modeling: Estimating breakeven point, ROI, and operational cost projections.
🛠️ How We Built It
- Planning Phase:
Conducted field interviews with farmers, traders, and cooperatives.
Drafted system requirements and user journeys.
- Development Phase:
Built a prototype mobile and web app using Flutter + Firebase.
Developed a simple dashboard for cooperatives and buyers.
- Testing & Feedback:
Ran beta testing with 15 farmers in the Sidama region.
Iterated based on feedback on language, UI, and features.
⚠️ Challenges We Faced
Connectivity Issues: Many farmers operate in areas with no internet, so we had to integrate USSD and SMS solutions.
Financial Constraints: Bootstrapping the prototype meant limited resources for wide deployment.
Trust Issues: Farmers were initially skeptical about digital platforms due to scams. We had to educate and partner with local cooperatives to gain credibility.
Team Coordination: As a remote team, we had to rely on strong communication and flexible workflows, using tools like Trello and Slack.
💡 What's Next?
We aim to:
Secure funding to scale nationwide.
Integrate mobile payments (e.g., Telebirr).
Launch an AI model for yield prediction based on weather and soil data.
By combining passion for community development with technology, Gebere-Link is more than just a platform—it’s a movement toward an inclusive digital economy for Ethiopia's farmers.
