Inspiration
India’s female labor-force participation is among the lowest in the world and what is worse, it has only stagnated in the last decade. This has been attributed to factors such as societal attitudes that give preference to early marriages over jobs and education, general disapproval of working women, and a lack of suitable job opportunities for them. Women also continue to be employed mostly in low-paying, low-value jobs. As per UN reports, armed conflicts, displacement and migration, and the Covis-19 pandemic leave tens of thousands of women newly widowed. The experience of widowhood in India varies across various socio-economic statuses, customs, religions, traditions, and periods. However, they are still subject to customary laws, deep-rooted patriarchal traditions, religious legislations, and extensive prejudice in inheritance rights. As a result, many families of different communities still shun and abandon widows. In India, the main earning member in about 70 percent of all households is a male, and the earnings of the women counterpart are significantly less. Many times, upon the male member's death the future of the family becomes uncertain and the household income plummets since the women have no opportunity for employment and survival.
Apart from all this another stats by UN showcase perfectly that less than 1% of the disabled women and girls receive proper education.
What it does
This project aims to provide employment to women, particularly those who are widows and/or have disabilities or are divorcees making it difficult for them to find employment. This is achieved by having potential employers sign-up on the platform and subsequently listing out new roles they need to be fulfilled along with the required skill set and other relevant details pertaining to the job. The platform also allows for employee signup and list out their skills along with job preferences. Through the two datasets, two-way suggestions can be generated and shared on respective profiles; suggested employees to the employers and suggested jobs to the potential employees, in this case, the women who sign-up on our portal looking for job opportunities. The recruiter has the option to reach out to the potential candidates and fulfill their vacancies, also the women signed up as employees have the opportunity to choose from the various jobs filtered out for them that are best suited to them.
How we built it
We built this web application using React js, one of the most powerful and user friendly library of javascript. We have also used a mix of CSS3 and Tailwind CSS for styling our web app
Challenges we ran into
During this hackathon, all three of us ran into a number of challenges starting from ideation to coding. This was our first time coding the complete web application ourselves for a hackathon , so definitely we ran into a number of bugs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As this was our first time, completely coding the website without using an template, we are definitely proud of that. In this way we are able to help women and their families whose future has been rendered uncertain due to the death of the earning male a chance to earn a living and secure their future with the help of easy access to preferred jobs and roles at a wide range of industries and associated countries.
What we learned
Through the pre-build research and statistical research we were able to get an insight to the employment gender gap in our country and the dependency of Indian households on the main earning male member. It is evident that from the current condition in our country that upon the death of the male member the future of the family becomes uncertain and the widows struggle to find employment and support for their family, due to social stigmas associated with widowed population and improper channels.
What's next for Empower
As far as future is concerned, our primary aim would be to add more pages to the application and develop its backend. After that we have thought of training an AI/ML model to automate the backend stuff for women employability. After that we can take our product to a global scale for needy women all across the world
