Inspiration

We were inspired by girlswhocode.com and the amazing work they do to close gender gaps in the tech industry. We believe that by outreaching more young girls and underrepresented minorities around the globe, we can take a major leap towards equity and inclusion.

What it does

Our app features a front-page, with resources, socials, and reviews tabs. The resources include helping women in tech find opportunities through job offerings, conferences, and events. The social aspect provides essential networking that lowers the barrier for entry into the tech industry. The reviews consist of women's ratings on their workplace diversity and gender equality, which helps other women find a fitting work environment.

How we built it

We designed and coded the app through code.org mobile project. The functionality is encoded through Javascript, and the app design itself is rooted in HTML.

Challenges we ran into

Code.org does not offer easy collaborator access, so we could not edit the same project at the same time. This made it difficult to synchronize our progress, which we had to overcome by sending periodic copies of our individual versions to each other.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the amount of content our app includes given the short period of time we were allotted. Our app includes seven full pages, and almost all of the buttons are functional.

What we learned

Through this hackathon event, we learned the hard skills of front-end development such as HTML and Javascript. We also gained soft skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity. Additionally, we recognized the scope by which the tech industry lacks diversity, and how we can do our part to close these gender gaps.

What's next for Empower()

As we expand our knowledge, we can apply our skills to initiate consistent improvements upon our ideas and execution. While Empower() is a rough sketch of what we had in mind, it's still representative of the impact and outreach we hope to accomplish.
