Inspiration

The spark for EmpathyHub came from a friend’s battle with anxiety, where costly therapy and impersonal online forums left them isolated. I wanted to build a platform where people facing mental health challenges—like stress, anxiety, or loneliness—could connect with peers who truly understand. Inspired by the need for accessible, human support, I joined the Bolt World’s Largest Hackathon, starting May 30, 2025, to bring this vision to life using Bolt.new, aiming to create a movement for global mental health healing.

What it does

EmpathyHub is an AI-powered platform that connects individuals with peers who share similar mental health experiences. Using Bolt.new’s AI, it matches users based on emotional needs and preferences, offering real-time text, voice, or video support in a safe, stigma-free space. With a gamified system (e.g., “empathy points” for engagement) and a soothing pastel interface, it fosters meaningful connections, making mental health support relatable, inclusive, and community-driven.

How we built it

Starting May 30, 2025, at 11:07 PM IST, I built EmpathyHub with Bolt.new as the core, integrating its NLP for AI matching and database for user profiles. I enhanced it with a custom React.js frontend for a responsive UI, Node.js/Express for backend logic, and Socket.IO with WebRTC for real-time communication. The app, featuring a calming design and accessibility (e.g., text-to-speech), was deployed on Vercel(frontend) and AWS(backend), displaying the “Built with Bolt.new” badge, and submitted by noon IST, June 30, 2025.

Challenges we ran into

Refining the AI matching was challenging—initial pairings were off, necessitating NLP adjustments. Optimizing the React UI for mobile responsiveness under Bolt.new’s constraints was challenging. Ensuring end-to-end encryption for WebRTC calls and privacy compliance added complexity. The tight hackathon timeline from May 30 to June 24 tested my ability to balance functionality and design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of a fully functional prototype with 90% accurate AI matching after iterations. The inclusive design, with multilingual support and text-to-speech, stands out. Deploying a scalable app on Netlify and Heroku within the hackathon’s timeframe (May 30–June 24, 2025) is a major win. EmpathyHub’s potential to impact global mental health as a viral, peer-driven platform is our proudest achievement.

What we learned

I mastered integrating Bolt.new with custom code (React, Node.js), learning AI-driven matching and responsive design. Accessibility became a focus, ensuring the app suits diverse users. Iterative testing revealed its importance, and I gained insights into balancing technical and emotional design for mental health tools.

What's next for EmpathyHub: An AI-Powered Support Platform for Mental Health

Next, I’ll add Spotify API for mood-based music and explore AR/VR for virtual safe spaces. Expanding multilingual support with the Google Translate API will boost global reach. I plan to partner with mental health organizations for validation and pitch EmpathyHub to investors, aiming to establish it as a leading, scalable mental health platform
