Empathica

Inspiration

By helping those who struggle with their sense of social perception, our app allows them to navigate the social world easier to make meaningful social connections. Through promotion of emotional, mental and social wellness for struggling individuals is important, especially in a world facing a loneliness epidemic and isolation.

What it does

An app that creates visual representations of your social interactions through in-app recording sessions. With information and algorithms, the app determines your current stress level based on live events, and social battery based on logged interactions throughout each day.

How we built it

We built it by using FigmaMake AI to create a base model and then went in and altered and added the code to get all the features we wanted.

Challenges we ran into

Because we were using FigmaMake, we were automatically in a restricted dev mode. I found this to be troublesome when I wanted to add a specific feature. A variable would be sent back to the parent (which I didn't have access too), and the parent would alter the variable. When it finally got back to the AppContext file, it was a different value. We found the Figma Slides to be a bit harder than other platforms to navigate. We also felt that it has less features and less user-friendly compared to other slides platforms.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is both my partner and I's first time doing a Makeathon, and my first time coding an app UI. I'm very proud to have gotten to the place we did with the ease I found it to be. Although it's speculative, I'm proud to say the app works and is easily navigable. We were able to add all the features we wanted (except the one) and are fully functional.

What we learned

I learned a lot about JavaScript and the normal file layout of an app and how files communicate. I think FigmaMake is a great tool for development, although it comes with limitation, it does make initial building and feature adding very easy.

What's next for Empathica

Although the app is supposed to be speculative, we would love to see the app become a fully operational app. With integration of algorithms and data collection that could be ahead of its time, we believe the app could flourish into what it was built for.
