Inspiration

Paraguayan cuisine is renowned for its richness, variety, and deep cultural roots. Among its most iconic dishes, empanadas hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. However, despite their popularity, there has never been a centralized platform where people could discover, rate, and share the best places to enjoy empanadas — whether homemade, baked, fried, mandi’o-style, or from well-known local chains.

This project was born out of a passion for connecting people with the true culinary soul of Paraguay through a modern, interactive, and community-driven experience. The mission: to build a living, evolving map of Paraguayan empanadas, powered by the people who love them.

What it does

Navigate an interactive map of empanada spots throughout Paraguay

Filter by type of empanada: homemade, baked, mandi’o, fried, and more

Explore user-generated rankings based on flavor, texture, and cooking style

Rate and review empanada spots, upload photos, and share experiences

Stay informed about promotions, local food events, and empanada festivals

Businesses can register to manage their profiles, menus, and exclusive deals

Save favorite places and build a personalized “empanada trail”

Available primarily in Spanish, with full English support and more languages coming soon

The platform is fully accessible without requiring an account for basic browsing. However, registering unlocks enhanced features and deeper community engagement.

How we built it

We developed Empamapa as a fully responsive web and mobile solution using a modern technology stack:

Web Frontend: React.js

Mobile App: React Native for iOS and Android

Database & Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL)

Mapping System: Leaflet.js for dynamic, real-time maps

Localization: react-i18next, with Spanish as the default language

User Roles: Dual-role registration system for both customers and empanada vendors

Backend API: RESTful API managing authentication, CRUD operations, filters, rankings, and more

Challenges we ran into

Designing a user-friendly interface that resonates with both locals and international visitors

Developing a flexible and secure authentication system with real-time role switching

Balancing open access for new users with incentives for account creation

Addressing culturally sensitive distinctions between homemade and commercial empanadas in a respectful, intuitive way

Optimizing performance for mobile devices while handling real-time maps, media uploads, and filter logic
