Inspiration

With COVID-19, we have trackers that display data on how many cases are happening around the globe but we are less aware of the emotional impact and how the pandemic is affecting people. We hope to use this tracker to not only be aware of people emotionally impacted around us, but to also reach out to them and offer support.

What it does

EmoTracker is a story-telling and community care application. It allows users to create a post anonymously so that they can feel like they are in a safe environment to talk. It also allows users to see other related posts so that they can know they’re not alone and someone is just a keyboard away to offer support. We have a mood tracker that plots emojis on the map based on their geolocation in hopes that people can also find someone in their close proximity to offer encouragement.

How we built it

We used Figma for basic UI designs, used GitHub to create issues and assign tasks, used React as our front-end, and deployed it through Heroku.

Challenges we ran into

We had less people than expected to collaborate on the project and had to learn how to adjust our workload and what to focus on based on what we had. Due to time constraints, we were not able to implement the back-end with Express.js and MongoDB, which functionality was substituted with test data provided by the React front-end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Prior to this project, our team had no experience dealing with geolocation and used Google Maps API to plot emojis for the first time. Our teammate also had less experience working with React and was able to learn the basics of such technology in a short amount of time.

What We learned

--the importance of planning a project --how to (or attempt to) work under a time constraint --how geolocation and Google Map API works --how to deploy a project to Heroku

What's next for EmoTracker

We hope as more posts are posted around the global community, we are able to provide data where people can be aware of the emotional impact COVID-19 has caused, such as how many people have been affected by a loss caused by the virus, by loss of benefits, by increasement in medical bills, by the breakdown of a relationship, or by increased opportunities of being exposed to domestic abuse, etc. We also hope that we can implement an accountability partner feature where users can choose to have someone to check in with them, or to talk to for emotional support. (Of course, this is not a replacement for professional help.)
