Inspiration
When we saw the "connections" theme, we immediately thought of the topic that connects our team to each other and most of the people around the world. One thing that connects so many of us is music. We wanted to create an application that would help link emotions and music, as well as a fun little simulation to fit the mood.
What it does
When the application is run, there are many moods to choose from. These are twelve of the most common moods, so that they can apply to many people. From there, people click on a mood, and three playlists of the top genres for that mood open up. This is better than people individually searching up genres, as there is a wide variety of choices that can suit any kind of that mood. After they start listening to a song, they can then return to the application and play a pedigree simulation to improve their mood, if they wish. The pedigree stimulation allows you to see up to four generations of pea plants, and their genotypes. It allows you to focus on something trivial to take your mind off of any worries.
How we built it
We built this application through pygame, using Python.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into so many challenges throughout this process. First, most of us knew different languages, so it was hard to find one that we could all collaborate on. However, we overcame that through playing to different people's strengths and allowing the people familiar with Python to code it, while others helped with ideas and other tasks that were necessary to the project. There were also many problems we overcame with the code, such as buttons not working and links not showing. We were eventually able to overcome all of them through careful editing, debugging, and reading. As a team, we had to overcome the challenge of only being able to access the project on one computer, as the sharing feature was not working.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we came up with a successful project, despite some members' lack of enough coding knowledge. We were able to incorporate different elements and smoothly integrate them.
What we learned
We learned so much through the journey of creating a large coding project. For some technical knowledge, we learned how to create clickable buttons with hyperlinks incorporated, as well as successfully link different pages so that users can jump from page to page. As a team, we also learned how to work together and collaborate, especially as we could only work on one computer at a time.
What's next for Emotion Connection
We can make Emotion Connection personalized, so that users can input their preferred genres and find even more music on that specific genre, instead of a wide array of genres. This can be an option for users to choose, because we do believe that there are benefits to being able to access wide arrays of music.
