Inspiration
- I’ve always liked how emojis can tell a story without words. That gave me the idea to build a puzzle game where the goal is to guess a phrase just from emojis.
What it does
- EmotiContest shows players a daily set of emojis that represent a phrase, movie, or concept.
- The challenge is to guess the answer by typing in the missing words.
- Once the right words are entered, the puzzle is solved and a celebration message appears.
How we built it
- The project is written in TypeScript with Vite running the client side. I used a client–server–shared structure so puzzle data can be reused. The game runs inside Reddit through Devvit, so it can be played directly in a post.
Challenges we ran into
Fixing build errors (like the --https issue in Vite)
Dealing with TypeScript complaining about possibly-undefined values
Getting the game to actually render inside Reddit instead of showing a blank screen
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
Getting the full client–server–Devvit setup running
Creating a functional daily puzzle system
Seeing the puzzle actually render and be playable inside Reddit
What we learned
Setting up Vite and Devvit together
Handling state and input in React/TypeScript
How to structure shared code between client and server
What’s next for EmotiContest
I want to expand the puzzle set, add scoring or streaks for players, and maybe allow user-submitted puzzles. It would also be fun to polish the visuals and make the game easier to share across subreddits.
