Inspiration The current and unexpected COVID-19 pandemic will have a huge impact on social life and emotional wellbeing. How the new reality will be? How will change our lives? A clear impact is the emotional impact as the whole society will have to face a new reality. They will feel unsafe and lonely since social relationships will dramatically change. Moreover, we wonder what will happen in the post-COVID-19 period, when the health professionals (at different levels working in hospitals) will be suffering from mental disorders because of their current work during this first wave of COVID-19 attack? Many sick leaves are envisaged that will last months. If this happens, who will to take care of the infected people in a second wave of attack, probably during autumn? This pandemic has also shown us how important is to manage obesity as the numbers of mortality among people with obesity are scaring. To cope with a new infection wave, society needs to be prepared, and healthy lifestyles needs to be implemented at the population level to reduce burden of disease. This simple app can be very helpful for health professionals, for those people who have been admitted to the hospital for a long time (20-60 days), for those people who have lost one relative or more, for those people who are afraid to transmit the virus infection of to be infected. Indeed, for the general population, no matter the age.

What it does e-MINDFOOD is an easy-to-use app that records data about emotional mood, psychological traits and lifestyle habits (nutritional and physical activity). E-MINDFOOD processes the data and gives an output to the user containing specific advices and tools to improve his/her well-being. Additionally, this app will provide developers with epidemiologic lifestyle and psychologic data that could be analysed using big data and machine-learning strategies to provide valuable information for the development of preventive strategies that could be designed with the collaboration of social and healthcare stakeholders. Finally, this app will provide the user the opportunity to join other “users’ community”. This option can be an interesting tool where users can communicate each other and share information about the use of the application.

How I built it eMINDFOOD is a native app that will be developed with the use of top-market tools such as BBDD NoSQL from Google ( for data storage and analysis and Flutter (, also from Google, to develop natively compiled applications for mobile, web, and desktop. eMINDFOOD will use Google Maps to provide alternative walking programs.

Challenges I ran into The idea of an app working as an observatory of the impact of the psychological and nutritional consequences of the post-COVID new reality, has engrossed to cover also a SERVICE to the individuals in need of psychological therapy. This required adaptation of the business plan to a more ambitious strategy of stakeholder’s support and funding.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of eMINDFOOD will reduce the COVID-19 disease burden and will help to prevent future sequelae due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and to a putative future regrowth. eMINDFOOD is developed by a multidisciplinary team with high potential capacities to structuring the next steps. One of the focus will be to work on the “motivation to change” the impaired lifestyles emerging in the post-covid new reality.

What I learned The need for an approach to encourage people to adhere to a healthy lifestyle in a stressful situation like this resulted from COVID-19 pandemic. The need to manage obesity to reduce morbidity and mortality derived from COVID-19, which will be key in a putative second contagious wave. How to do a business model and be more persuasive to communicate ideas.

What's next for eMindFood Develop the app, test it with a pilot launch, marketing to insurance companies and private health consortiums interested in surveillance of psychosocial wellbeing of collectives, such as the medical practitioners, health-care collectives, or the general population. In the long-term globalization of the App and big data analysis of users’ data collected might help generate patients’ profiles to define precise therapies adapted to those profiles
