Inspiration

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 9 out of 10 Africans currently lack access to urgent and emergency medical resources, leading to approximately 6.2 million preventable deaths each year. In sub-Saharan Africa, there is no centralized emergency number like 911 to call during a crisis.

This issue is due to several factors:

  • Poor Infrastructure: There is limited visibility of existing ambulance services due to the absence of a central dispatch and communication system.
  • Information Gaps: People often do not know who to call, where to go, or what to do in an emergency.
  • Lack of Immediate Medical Assistance: Access to trained medical personnel is often not available as quickly as needed.

What it does

Emergify is an AI-powered health emergency responder designed to save lives in areas with inadequate health emergency response systems and in disaster zones.

In an emergency, individuals can rely on Emergify to:

  • Access First Aid Guidance: Receive clear instructions on what to do and what to avoid in an emergency situation.
  • Locate the Nearest and Most Suitable Hospital: Emergify helps users find the best hospital equipped to handle their specific situation.
  • Connect with Trained Medical Professionals: When expert medical advice is needed, Emergify connects users with the appropriate remote medical professionals who are best suited to assist.

How we built it

  1. First Aid Guidance:
Emergify leverages Google’s Gemini AI, fine-tuned on a vast record of emergency scenarios. Just like an experienced emergency responder, it guides users on how to manage the situation effectively.
  2. Hospital Location:
Emergify doesn’t just show nearby hospitals; it identifies the best hospital capable of handling the specific emergency. By analyzing the user’s description of the situation with Gemini AI, which has been trained on an extensive list of treatments and specialties, Emergify ranks hospitals based on their ability to provide the necessary care and their proximity.
  3. Connection with Medical Professionals:
During disasters like earthquakes, floods, or conflicts, Emergify connects users with medical professionals. By processing the user’s description through Gemini AI, Emergify determines the required specialty and immediately links the patient with the first available doctor who accepts

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Inclusivity:
With the voice mode feature, users like people with disabilities can navigate and use the app entirely by voice commands. For instance, saying, “Hey Responder, go to First Aid,” can take the user directly to the first aid page.
  • API Access:
State governments and other organizations can integrate Emergify’s APIs into their emergency infrastructure to enhance their existing response systems.

What we learned

No existing medical platform can match users with the appropriate medical facilities or professionals using natural language descriptions. This core technology is what sets Emergify apart—“Ranking a medical database using natural language.” For example, on other platforms, if someone is coughing up blood, they would need to know the possible diagnosis or treatment needed to find the right professional. Emergify removes this complexity. By simply describing the symptoms, such as “He is coughing up blood from his mouth,” Emergify processes this through Gemini AI fine tuned to determine possible treatments and specialties needed. The system then ranks hospitals in its database to identify the best match.

What's next for Emergify

Deploying to our initial target who are tech-savvy individuals within communities in Africa who can use Emergify to assist themselves and those around them in health emergencies. We also think this technology could potentially save an estimated 1.2 million lives over the next one to two years based on a report by Emergency Response Africa.
