About the Project

Inspiration

During a medical emergency, finding a suitable blood donor can be stressful and time-consuming. Donor information is often spread across phone contacts, messaging groups, social media, and other sources. We wanted to create a simple solution that could make it easier to connect people in need with nearby blood donors.

What We Built

We developed Emergency Blood Donor & SOS Alert Directory, a web-based platform designed to connect people requiring blood with nearby available donors.

Donors can register their blood group, locality, contact details, and availability status. A person in need can create an SOS request by providing the required blood group and location. The system helps identify suitable nearby donors and provides a quick contact option.

Our key features include blood group and locality-based matching, SOS alerts, donor availability tracking, and quick donor contact.

How We Built It

The project is designed using the MERN stack, consisting of:

  • MongoDB for storing user, donor, and SOS request data
  • Express.js for backend APIs
  • React.js for the frontend interface
  • Node.js for server-side development

We structured the application into modules for authentication, donor management, SOS requests, donor matching, and administration.

What We Learned

While developing the project, we gained a better understanding of how a full-stack application connects the frontend, backend, APIs, and database. We also learned the importance of validating user input and designing a simple interface for situations where users may need to act quickly.

Challenges We Faced

One of the main challenges was deciding how to efficiently match donors based on blood group, locality, and availability while keeping the system simple and user-friendly.

Another challenge was planning the database structure and ensuring that donor and SOS information could be managed consistently. Designing the project around a real-world emergency scenario also made us think carefully about usability and reliable data handling.

Our Goal

Our goal is to make emergency blood donor coordination faster, simpler, and more organized, especially within local communities.

We believe that connecting the right donor with the right person at the right time can make the process of finding emergency blood support much more efficient.

What it does

Emergency Blood Donor & SOS Alert Directory is a web-based platform designed to help people find suitable blood donors quickly during emergencies. Donors can register their blood group, locality, contact details, and availability. Users can create urgent SOS requests, and the system helps identify nearby available donors based on blood group and locality, with a quick contact option.

How we built it

We are building the project using the MERN stack:

  • React.js for the frontend and user interface
  • Node.js and Express.js for the backend and APIs
  • MongoDB for storing user, donor, and SOS request data

The system is organized into modules for authentication, donor management, SOS requests, donor matching, and administration.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was designing an effective way to match donors based on blood group, locality, and availability. We also had to plan the database structure carefully so that donor and SOS information could be stored and retrieved efficiently.

Another challenge was keeping the interface simple and easy to use, especially because the system is intended for emergency situations where users need information quickly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a solution that focuses on a real-world healthcare problem and combines several important features into one platform.

Our key features include SOS alerts, locality-based donor matching, availability tracking, donor registration, and quick donor contact.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to plan and develop a full-stack MERN application, including frontend design, backend APIs, database integration, and data validation.

We also learned how important usability and simple workflows are when designing technology for emergency situations.

What's next for Emergency Blood Donor & SOS Alert Directory

We plan to further improve the platform by adding features such as real-time notifications, map-based donor discovery, improved SOS alert delivery, donor verification, and better emergency request tracking.

Our long-term goal is to make the platform more useful for local communities by providing a faster and more reliable way to connect people in need with available blood donors.
