Inspiration

Elpis means "hope" in Greek. Online spaces can become very toxic spaces. With people doom posting, hating, and endlessly scrolling (Twitter)...it’d be nice to have a space where you could just post positive content, stories. We wanted a low-pressure space where people could jot down how their day went and then see the bigger picture. Instead of another private journal, we asked: what if you could feel the collective mood of a community at a glance? That question became Elpis.

What it does

Elpis lets you post short notes about your day and see everyone else's on a shared board. You can delete your own notes anytime. The standout feature: hit "Analyze the Mood," and Gemini reads every post and gives you a plain-English summary of how people are generally feeling and the common concerns coming up.

How we built it

We split our team into three basic parts: Frontend, backend and database. We started building our frontend using HTML and basic CSS. Then once satisfied, we integrated the frontend with the backend which communicated with the database using SQLite. We learned how to deploy it using render to see everything working seamlessly.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many issues beginning with integration of the frontend and the backend. During this project, we ran out of our daily quotas for testing. This interfered with most of our testing as it took us time to figure out this was the error we were receiving.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Keeping in mind this is all of our first hackathon project, we were proud to immerse ourselves into the experience fully. We shipped a fully deployed, end-to-end full-stack app, a real database, a live AI feature, and a public URL anyone can visit. More than that, we debugged genuine production problems (a broken deploy, an invalid key, a script-halting bug) and got everything working together.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate and deploy a frontend and backend together using FastAPI and GeminiAPI. We learned how to handle secret keys while using git so as to not expose them on our public repository. We also learned how to read error logs and understand where the errors were located.

What's next for Elpis

In the future, we hope to develop user accounts so notes are personal and secure. This would require logging in, making friends, developing an archive for all your own posts. This would offer a choice between community and anonymity. We also want to develop a mood trend that displays your mood over the span of days to months depicted in charts. This website could also be integrated with AI to populate people’s notes with similar feelings to you during that day to encourage people to reach out and communicate, guiding users to the right resources.
