What I Learned

This project helped me strengthen my python fundamentals and explore GUI development using Tkinter . I learned how to structure code for readability, manage environment variables, and optimize performance for system with limited Ram. I also gained experience using GitHub Markdown to document my work.

How I Built It

I Built the tool using python and Tkinter on Windows 10. The interface allows users to input income and expenses, categorize transactions, and view summaries. I focused on keeping the app lightweight by avoiding heavy libraries and using efficient data structures. I also tested the tool on low-resource machines to ensure smooth performance.

Challenges

One major challenge was balancing functionality with system efficiency. I had to carefully choose libraries that wouldn’t consume too much memory. Debugging layout issues in Tkinter was also tricky at first, but I learned to use grid and pack methods effectively. Another challenge was writing clean documentation and preparing a demo that clearly shows how the tool works.

Next Steps

I plan to expand the tool with features like savings goals, recurring expenses, and export options. I also want to connect with mentors and other coders to improve the project and make it more impactful for students and families.

Elevator pitch update

When I first started SmartSpend, my Elevator Pitch was simple: “A budgeting tool for students.” But as the project grew, I realized it needed to reflect both the purpose and the technical strengths.

Here’s the updated pitch:

SmartSpend is a lightweight budgeting tool that helps students track expenses, set savings goals, and build smarter financial habits—designed to run smoothly even on low-spec devices.

This version highlights the tool’s impact and its performance focus. I’d love feedback—does it clearly explain the value? Would you improve or simplify it further?

Also working on a demo video next. Stay tuned!
