Inspiration

Many women face barriers when it comes to accessing mentorship, skill development, and guidance. Traditional mentorship networks are often limited, male-dominated, or inaccessible due to cost, geography, or lack of representation. As a result, women may struggle to find relatable mentors, build confidence, or gain the skills needed to advance in their careers and personal goals.

What it does

ElevateHer is a mobile app that connects women with mentors and mentees to exchange skills, gain guidance, and build confidence.

The app uses a Tinder-style swiping interface that makes it simple and engaging for users to discover and connect with potential mentors or mentees. Once matched, users can view profiles, explore skill offerings, and begin building meaningful connections. With personalized recommendations powered by AI, ElevateHer ensures mentorship is both accessible and relevant.

At ElevateHer, our mission is to empower women by fostering meaningful mentor–mentee connections that unlock skills, confidence, and opportunities. We strive to create a supportive space where women can learn, grow, and lead - together - transforming mentorship into a movement of empowerment and lifelong impact.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React Native with CSS for styling and TypeScript for reliability and scalability.
  • Database & APIs: MongoDB for user data management and mentorship session storage.
  • AI Integration: Gemini API powers smart recommendations to help users find mentors/mentees with aligned goals and skills.
  • Platform: Built for iOS with a smooth, mobile-first UX.

Challenges we ran into

  • When integrating the frontend and backend, we realized too late that Windows OS couldn’t emulate an iOS environment. As a result, half the team couldn’t properly contribute to frontend testing and development.
  • We attempted to integrate streaming features for live mentorship sessions, but the frontend SDK wasn’t compatible with our backend, which led to technical roadblocks.
  • Balancing real-time features with app performance in React Native was also a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a Tinder-style swiping frontend in React Native, allowing users to intuitively browse and match with mentors/mentees.
  • Developed a functional iOS app prototype within the hackathon timeframe.
  • Implemented AI-driven recommendations for meaningful mentor–mentee connections.
  • Created an app focused on accessibility and inclusivity for women of diverse backgrounds.

What we learned

  • How to integrate Gemini’s AI APIs into a real-world application.
  • Best practices in React Native and TypeScript development.
  • The importance of inclusive design for mentorship and skill-sharing platforms.

What's next for ElevateHER

  • Enhancing the AI recommendation engine for deeper personalization.
  • Adding in-app chat and video calls for seamless mentorship sessions.
  • Expanding to Android for wider reach.
  • Partnering with schools, nonprofits, and organizations to scale mentorship opportunities.
  • Integrating Cloud (GC, AWS, Azure) in our project
