Inspiration
The concept of the Cognitive Focus Room is indeed inspired by the psychological concept of "flow," a mental state in which a person is fully immersed in an activity, experiencing heightened focus, engagement, and enjoyment.
What it does
To enhance focus and productivity while also monitoring and responding to the user's mental state. Here's how it works:
Monitoring Mental State: The room uses eye tracking technology to determine where the user is looking and for how long, providing insights into their level of focus. Facial Expression Analysis: It analyzes facial expressions to infer the user's emotional state, like stress, engagement, or fatigue.
Adaptive Environment: Based on the data gathered, the VR environment adapts in real-time. For instance, if the user is detected to be stressed or overstimulated, the environment might shift to a more calming scene, like a tranquil forest or a quiet library.
The auditory environment can also change, introducing calming sounds or music, or conversely, more stimulating and focus-enhancing sounds based on the user's current state.
Mindfulness and Relaxation Features: Integrating mindfulness practices, the room can offer guided meditation or breathing exercises to help the user regain focus and reduce stress.It might also suggest short breaks or light physical activities based on the user's current cognitive load.
Personalization and Learning: AI algorithms learn from each session, customizing the environment and tools to better suit the user's preferences and working style.The system remembers settings that were most effective for the user's productivity and well-being, applying these insights in future sessions.
Feedback and Reporting: The Cognitive Focus Room provides feedback on the user's focus and productivity levels, offering insights and suggestions for improvement. It could also generate reports for the user to track their mental state trends and productivity over time.
In essence, the Cognitive Focus Room is a smart, adaptive VR workspace that not only aims to improve productivity but also pays attention to the user's mental well-being, adjusting the environment in real-time to create the most conducive setting for work and mental health.
How we built it
By utilising interaction pack eye tracking and hand tracking to effectively infer a user mental state.
Eye Tracking
- Focus Level: By monitoring where and how long a user looks at certain objects or areas in the XR environment, you can gauge their level of focus. Frequent shifts in gaze might indicate distraction or a search for information.
- Cognitive Load: Pupil dilation can be an indicator of cognitive load. Larger pupil size often correlates with increased mental effort, which could suggest the user is processing complex information or feeling overwhelmed.
- Engagement: Tracking how users interact with virtual elements (like looking at specific tools or reading text) can give insights into their engagement and interest levels.
Facial Tracking
- Emotional State: Facial expressions are key indicators of emotion. Recognizing expressions like frowning, smiling, or looking puzzled can help infer the user's emotional state, such as frustration, satisfaction, or confusion.
- Stress Level: Signs of stress or discomfort can be detected through facial cues. For instance, furrowed brows or tight jaw muscles may indicate stress or concentration issues.
- Fatigue Detection: Signs like frequent blinking or yawning can indicate fatigue, suggesting the need for a break or a change in activity to re-energize the user.

Accomplishments that we're proud of
The feature of monitoring and responding to a user's mental state in the Cognitive Focus Room significantly helps in reducing fatigue and improving the overall mental state. This innovative approach can have a profound impact on the VR experience.
What we learned
Engaging with online communities and forums to understand current state of VR. Learning from the experiences and insights of others in the VR space fostered a deeper understanding of the Pico ecosystem and its user base. This idea hold immense potential to assist users in eliminating distractions and achieving a state of flow.
What's next for Cognitive Focus Room
Evolving the Cognitive Focus Room into a more dynamic, user-friendly, and widely applicable tool for enhancing focus and productivity in various settings.
