Inspiration

Recently, when I went for a housewarming party I saw that after everyone left there was a huge quantity of food that was still left. However, what pinched more was that the caterers were throwing it into the garbage can. When asked as to why they were doing this, they confirmed that there was no one else to eat and they could not re-sell this in other parties. I found this so counterintuitive- in a world where solving hunger was the first Sustainable Development Goal, malnourished children at every corner how could there not be people to eat?

The food waste index report of 2021 indicates that approximately 17% of all food production is wasted. Starvation kills 25,000 people each day and yet we have the food to feed the entire population. Because of this, we were inspired to build something that solved this grave issue.

What it does

At Team- Digitalisers, I have developed an app to connect parties with excess food to those struggling to obtain some. Extravagant parties, weddings and functions undoubtedly have an excess of food which is wasted without a second thought. This UI acts as an intermediary, giving people the opportunity to donate this food can potentially give somebody a hearty meal. In a digitally transforming society, almost everybody has access to the internet one way or another- be that through a communal phone, public computers or internet cafes. Our UI focuses on connecting people with extra food (individuals, restaurants, supermarkets etc.) by listing them as public postings, which allows people looking for donations (homeless shelters, NGO’s, individuals etc.) to collect the food, reducing the issue of hunger and food wastage simultaneously at a local but scalable level.

How we built it

I used the platform 'Figma' , 'Crello' and 'Canva' to create the User Interface for the potential App and

Challenges we ran into

Working with Figma proved to be quite difficult, as it was quite a tiresome task to install their packages. It was also difficult to design a user-friendly interface for the mobile app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The functional frontend user interface is something I am definitely proud of.

What we learned

I learned how to develop User interfaces for a potential App with a frontend. I also honed my skills to make interfaces more user-friendly and learned to work with software more seamlessly.

What's next for DonateAPlate

  • Donate now- an app feature that allows organizations to post fundraisers to our users. As a method of generating revenue, DonateAPlate will take a small % commission from the fundraiser as it gains support from our users.
  • Advertisements- our app will feature numerous advertisements related to social topics that may interest our target audience. To generate revenue, DonateAPlate will be paid as organizations use space on our app to promote themselves. These advertisements will be shown to donors and collectors, since both parties may be interested in learning about other organisations and social opportunities
  • * all advertisements and fundraisers will be vetted by us at Team-Q to ensure that they are legitimate and will not bother/ harm our users.
  • The app will include a comprehensive guide for new users when they create an account/ open the app for the first time. This will allow all our users to utilise DonateAPlate to the fullest.
  • The app will also be available in multiple languages to make it more locally accessible. As the app expands, Team-Q will continuously add more languages to increase ease of use and promote an efficient donation system.
  • * future plan of expanding DonateAPlate into a website to increase its accessibility to household collectors that do not have a smartphone yet may have limited access to the internet (public computers, internet cafes etc.)
