Inspiration

In a digital age dominated by screens, where children are often labeled as 'iPad kids' due to their extensive time spent on TikTok or video games, the need for a shift towards healthier habits has become critical. Our parents were right: health is paramount. Recognizing the issues arising from sedentary lifestyles—including physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, and mental health challenges—we were driven to innovate a solution that not only addresses these concerns but also engages the digital-native generation in a meaningful way.

What it does

"GPT Pet Game" merges the virtual and real worlds by linking the health of an electronic pet directly to the player's dietary choices. By uploading photos of their meals, players receive a health score based on nutritional content, which then influences their pet’s health and growth. This direct correlation encourages players to make healthier food choices. Additionally, the AI-enabled pets offer companionship and emotional interaction, serving as a source of comfort and a tool for mental well-being.

How we built it

Leveraging Python for backend development and Kivy for frontend game rendering, we constructed a platform that integrates advanced nutritional analysis and AI-driven dialogue. The use of the ChatGPT API enables real-time, natural interactions between players and their pets, enhancing the user experience and engagement.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was developing an accurate algorithm to analyze nutritional data from images of food—a complex task given the variety of meals and their components. Ensuring the AI interactions felt genuine and supportive also posed a significant challenge, as did designing an interface that was intuitive for children and engaging enough to draw them away from other screen activities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a game that not only entertains but also educates and promotes health. The positive feedback from users who have improved their dietary habits and found solace in their interactions with their virtual pets is particularly rewarding. Our integration of complex technologies into a user-friendly interface stands as a testament to our team’s dedication and skill.

What we learned

The project deepened our understanding of dietary science, AI, and user engagement strategies. We learned valuable lessons in data privacy and user interaction design, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for users.

What's next for Electronic Pet

Looking forward, we aim to introduce more personalized dietary feedback and expand the social features of the game. By allowing interaction between players' pets and integrating community challenges, we hope to create a more immersive and socially enriching experience that further encourages healthy living.
