Inspiration

This is an Android-Based Electromyography System Application for screening Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). RLS is often misdiagnosed in pediatric patients due to subjective diagnostic methods, which can result in children being exposed to unnecessary medication.

How it works

A tool that clinicians can use to capture EMG data from a patient’s leg muscles in clinical practice to help them better understand what is happening in a patient's muscles has been developed. The system consists of both a hardware and software component that communicate together wirelessly via Bluetooth. The hardware comes in the form of a band or leg cuff that can be easily strapped on to a patient’s leg. The hardware collects EMG data and transmits it wirelessly via Bluetooth to be displayed on any Android tablet or smartphone.

For this hackathon, we added the following features to the app:

  • Video preview and recording
  • Simultaneous viewing of video recording and graph data
  • Changed the display of time on the graph from relative to absolute time
  • Multi-channel functionalities for receiving data from more than one EMG system simultaneously

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Using the MediaRecorder class instead of using intents to integrate custom video functionalities
  • Changing the underlying data representation of the app to support multiple EMG devices
  • Synchronizing the progress with the video
  • Learning how to build an Android app in general!
