Electrifriends: A community for women in STEM

Inspiration

We were inspired by Robyn Exton, the founder of HER and a speaker at Technica! We wanted to create a safe space for another marginalized community--women in STEM.

What it does

Members can chat directly with each other, share jokes, advice, and industry news via forums, and view posts on our blog. On the home screen, there is a collage of images that represent different STEM interests, and users can click on those images to go directly to the forum associated with their interest.

How we built it

We built this website using the Wix Website Editor.

Challenges we ran into

Finding a platform to build a social media-like site with a direct member chat feature (as opposed to only a forum/blog). We tried three different platforms that didn't work, including two online dating site makers, before we found the Member Chat feature on Wix!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Designing our logo with a custom font, getting pictures on the home screen to link to forums for different STEM interests, finding a platform that supported direct member chat.

What we learned

Almost every project is about 75% googling random stuff.

What's next for Electrifriends: A community for women in STEM

Advertise Electrifriends in other online communities we're in and see if people are interested in joining the site. Add code to improve the chat feature to randomly "match" members with similar interests and add them to a group chat. Also add personality tests to match people to different forums.
