Inspiration
In the recent year, the pandemic outbreak and geopolitical events lead to a high demand in oil and low supply which pushed the gas prices up tremendously. At the same time, local Bostonians are making effort to protect the environment by substituting the use of gas cars with public transportation, bikes, electrical scooters, etc. Out of these substitutes, what caught our attention was the rise of electric car usage throughout the years. With more people substituting their primary transportation method with electric cars, the limited charging stations and opened parking spots became an issue. In this project, we sought to create a webpage that detects the the nearest opened charging station and parking spots for such cars.
What it does
Identifies whether a charging station is opened or taken
How we built it
Utilized Microsoft Custom Vision to train an AI to recognize the EV charging logos. If the logo is detected, the parking spot is identified as opened.
Challenges we ran into
Due to a lack of time, we were not able to generate our entire idea of creating a webpage or app to stimulate this process.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First time using Custom Vision and training our AI to recognize the EV charging logo with 100% precision
What we learned
We how to use machine learning to automate an AI, utilizing APIs, creating a website with python, creating a mobile app with flutter.
What's next for Electric Car Parking Spots
Once we finish with training our AI to recognize the open parking spots, which includes identifying open parking spots with movements of objects (such as plastic bags, moving carts, human beings, etc), we will continue by creating a webpage that takes in all of this information, creating a map like structure to help our community find these parking locations.
