Inspiration
Elderly people often struggle with remembering their medicines, loneliness, and not having immediate help in emergencies. We wanted to create an AI-powered companion that not only reminds and entertains but also ensures safety by alerting caregivers instantly.
What it does
ElderSense is an AI voice companion that: -Reminds seniors to take their medicines on time. -Plays songs and tells jokes for companionship. -Detects emergency words like “help” or “emergency” and sends email alerts to caregivers. -Provides both emotional support and practical assistance for safer, happier aging.
How I built it
-Developed the system in Python. -Used speech recognition APIs for voice commands and text-to-speech APIs for natural responses. -Integrated with APIs to play music and fetch jokes dynamically. -Used Flask (or similar framework, if you did) to connect modules and trigger notifications. -Implemented an email alert system for emergencies.
Challenges I ran into
-Making speech recognition work accurately for elderly voices and background noise. -Ensuring smooth integration between multiple APIs without delays. -Avoiding false emergency triggers while keeping the system responsive. -Designing a simple and friendly user flow suitable for seniors.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
-Successfully combined speech, reminders, music, and emergency alerts into one assistant. -Built a working prototype that feels interactive and supportive. -Created a system that balances technical functionality with human-centered care. -Demonstrated how APIs can be leveraged to build impactful real-world solutions.
What I learned
-How to integrate and synchronize multiple APIs in a single system. -The importance of designing AI tools that prioritize accessibility and ease of use. -How even simple features like music and jokes significantly improve user engagement. -How real-world healthcare-inspired solutions require reliability and accuracy.
What's next for ElderSense: An AI-Powered Companion for Elderly Care
-Add video call and chat features to connect directly with caregivers. -Expand support for multi-language interactions. -Integrate with IoT devices like fall sensors or smart home assistants. -Build a mobile caregiver dashboard to monitor reminders and alerts in real time. -Make ElderSense scalable for use in eldercare homes.
