Inspiration

The inspiration behind ElderlyCareServices came from a personal and pressing reality: Singapore's rapidly ageing population. As more families find themselves juggling demanding careers while navigating the complex, fragmented ecosystem of eldercare, the emotional and logistical toll on caregivers is immense. We witnessed firsthand how difficult it is to coordinate medical escorts, book home care, track vital health metrics, and ensure a senior’s social well-being. We wanted to build a centralized, compassionate ecosystem that bridges the gap between seniors, caregivers, and professional healthcare providers, ensuring no senior is left isolated.

What it does

ElderlyCareServices is a smart, all-in-one digital platform designed to streamline holistic eldercare management:

  • Care Matching & Booking: Connects families instantly with vetted home-nursing professionals, therapists, and medical escorts based on real-time availability and specific medical needs.
  • Smart Health Monitoring: Integrates with wearable devices to track vital signs (like heart rate and fall detection), sending instant alerts to caregivers if anomalies are detected.
  • Localized Active Ageing Hub: A simple, high-contrast interface for seniors to discover and register for nearby Active Ageing Centre (AAC) activities, promoting social inclusion.
  • Subsidy Calculator: A built-in AI tool that guides families through Singapore's complex care subsidies (like HCG and CareShield Life), estimating out-of-pocket costs instantly.

How I built it

We engineered the platform with a modern, scalable tech stack prioritized for high availability and accessibility:

  • Frontend: Built using React Native for a cross-platform mobile experience, heavily incorporating voice-to-text features and large-font, high-contrast UI components tailored for senior accessibility.
  • Backend: Powered by Node.js and Express, managing data flows efficiently across microservices.
  • Database & Cloud: Utilized MongoDB for flexible patient health logs and hosted the infrastructure on AWS, implementing strict encryption standard compliance for healthcare data privacy.
  • AI Integration: Implemented OpenAI's API to power the natural-language subsidy calculator, translating complex government means-testing policies into simple, conversational answers for families.

Challenges I ran into

Our biggest hurdle was designing a user interface that resonated with two completely different user demographics: tech-savvy caregivers and tech-averse seniors. Early user tests showed seniors struggled with traditional multi-step navigation. We had to completely pivot our frontend design to focus on voice commands and single-tap actions. Additionally, parsing and structuring the diverse criteria for Singapore's various healthcare subsidies into a logical code algorithm required deep compliance research and meticulous backend validation.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Senior-Centric Accessibility: We successfully designed a functional voice-assisted booking system that allows seniors with early-stage dementia or visual impairments to independently request a medical escort.
  • Seamless Integration: Achieving real-time data streaming between consumer smartwatches and our caregiver alert dashboard with minimal latency.
  • Impact-Driven Solution: Creating a tool that directly addresses a major societal challenge in Singapore, transforming a stressful logistical nightmare into a seamless, dignified experience.

What I learned

This project underscored that inclusive design is not an afterthought—it is the foundation of impactful software. We learned how to deeply empathize with users who have differing physical and cognitive abilities. From a technical standpoint, we deepened our knowledge of secure medical data handling, real-time IoT data pipelines, and how to train language models on highly specific regional policies and government frameworks.

What's next for ElderlyCareServices

We plan to scale ElderlyCareServices from a standalone app into a fully integrated community ecosystem. Our next immediate steps include:

  • Predictive Health Analytics: Implementing machine learning models to analyze long-term vital trends and predict potential health deterioration before it becomes an emergency.
  • Direct Singpass Integration: Partnering with government APIs to securely autofill means-testing data, making subsidy applications completely automated.
  • B2B Provider Portal: Building a dedicated portal for Active Ageing Centres and nursing homes to manage their rosters, track attendance, and seamlessly communicate with families.
