ElderEase is a voice-first, AI-powered medicine reminder app designed for elderly patients, offering smart prescription scanning, voice announcements and alarm notifications, & personalized schedules.

🚀 Inspiration

Caring for elderly family members highlighted a gap in accessible healthcare tech. Many seniors miss medications, struggle with prescription management, or feel isolated from their doctors due to tech barriers. We envisioned ElderEase as a compassionate, voice-first solution that combines the power of AI with simple, human-friendly design — helping seniors manage medicines, stay connected to doctors, and maintain dignity in their daily care.

💡 What It Does

ElderEase is an AI-powered, cross-platform mobile app that helps elderly users:

  1. 📷 Scan prescriptions using OpenAI Vision to auto-generate medicine plans
  2. 🗣️ Use voice interaction powered by ElevenLabs TTS to check schedules
  3. 🔔 Receive smart audio reminders even when the app is closed
  4. 💊 Add/edit medicines manually with swipe gestures
  5. 🌐 The app is designed with multilingual support in mind. While it’s currently available in English, the layout and architecture are fully prepared to support additional languages like Hindi, Spanish, French Marathi, and more in future updates.
  6. 📱 Navigate easily with a minimal UI featuring large fonts and just three tabs: My Medicines, Voice Assistant, and Settings

It also supports background alarms, secure local storage, and is built to be fully production-ready with error handling and offline capabilities.

🛠️ How We Built It

We used:

  1. React Native with Expo for cross-platform development
  2. OpenAI GPT-4 Vision to process scanned prescriptions
  3. ElevenLabs for lifelike, multilingual TTS voice responses
  4. React Navigation for intuitive tabbed navigation
  5. Expo Notifications + Alarm Manager for local push reminders
  6. Local Storage (AsyncStorage) to persist medicine data securely

Every feature was designed with the elderly user in mind — using large fonts, high contrast, and voice-driven interaction to minimize friction.

🧗 Challenges We Ran Into

  1. 🔄 Parsing varied prescription formats using GPT-4 Vision required extensive prompt tuning
  2. 🎙️ Integrating ElevenLabs while ensuring fallback to native TTS for offline use
  3. 🔕 Ensuring audio reminders and push notifications worked in the background, across Android/iOS reliably
  4. 🧪 Simulating slow interaction speeds suitable for elderly comprehension
  5. 🗂️ Designing a UI that’s both minimal and powerful without overloading the user

🏆 Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

📚 What We Learned

  2. Elderly-friendly design demands careful attention to timing, pacing, and interface language
  3. AI + Voice can radically simplify experiences when designed contextually
  4. Simplicity is harder to design than complexity, but always worth it

🔮 What’s Next for ElderEase

  1. 🌍 Add support for more Indian languages (Hindi, Spanish, French, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, etc)
  2. 🧬 Add health record sync and wearable integration (BP, glucose, etc.)
  3. 📻 Introduce “Elder Radio Mode” — daily updates, music, wellness tips via audio and ElevenLabs
  4. 🩺 Launch the Doctor Portal to manage patients, track health, and prescribe via web and chats
  5. 🔒 Add biometric login and medical history backup for families/caregivers
  6. 🌐 Expand ElderEase to support low-bandwidth and offline-first regions, ensuring uninterrupted access to critical health features even with limited internet connectivity. Implement robust data privacy and security protocols to make the platform HIPAA compliant, safeguarding sensitive medical information and building trust with users and healthcare providers alike.
  7. 🏩 Develop a full-fledged healthcare product that functions as a CRM for patient medication management, capable of storing medicine patterns, schedules, and prescription history. The platform can be expanded to integrate with medicine e-commerce partners like link Tata 1mg and linkPharmEasy, enabling seamless prescription-based ordering and real-time adherence tracking.

NOTE: The app has been publish and available only for ANDROID with an APK file. Since we do not have the paid Apple developer account for iOS. We will purchase the Apple developer account and publish the app soon for iOS soon. Also, sample prescription has been uploaded for testing. Thank you.
