Inspiration
The global elderly population is growing rapidly, yet many seniors live alone without continuous monitoring or immediate help during emergencies. Falls, missed medications, and delayed medical response are major risks. We built ElderConnect to create a reliable AI-powered companion that improves safety, health monitoring, and caregiver connectivity for seniors.
What it does
ElderConnect is an AI-powered elder care platform that combines IoT devices and a mobile application to support independent living for seniors. The system detects falls using a wearable device, monitors health metrics, sends medication reminders, and alerts caregivers instantly during emergencies. The platform also provides a simple interface for seniors and a dashboard for caregivers to monitor health and receive real-time notifications.
How we built it
The system integrates hardware, AI, and mobile technologies.
The wearable device uses an ESP32 microcontroller and motion sensors to detect falls and send alerts. The mobile application is built using React Native to provide a simple and accessible interface for seniors. A backend built with Node.js manages APIs, authentication, and alert handling. AI models process sensor data to detect abnormal movement patterns and trigger emergency notifications to caregivers.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was ensuring reliable fall detection without triggering false alarms. We also had to design a system that works with limited power consumption since wearable devices must operate for long periods. Another challenge was creating a user interface that is extremely simple and accessible for elderly users while still providing useful features for caregivers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an integrated system combining AI, IoT hardware, and a mobile app to support elderly safety. The fall detection system can automatically trigger alerts, and the caregiver notification system ensures immediate response during emergencies. We are proud of building a solution that has real potential to improve the quality of life and independence of seniors.
What we learned
Through this project we learned how to integrate IoT hardware with mobile applications and backend systems. We also gained experience designing AI-based safety systems and building technology with accessibility in mind. The project highlighted the importance of reliability, usability, and real-world impact when developing healthcare technology.
What's next for ElderConnect
Next, we plan to improve the fall detection algorithm using larger datasets and machine learning models. We also aim to integrate additional health monitoring features such as heart rate and blood pressure tracking. Future versions will include a caregiver analytics dashboard and integration with healthcare providers to enable more proactive and preventive care for seniors.
