Inspiration

Problem statement: How can we use technology to enable vulnerable groups to overcome language or physical barriers to access community networks, increasing and improving social interactions, especially during a crisis to empower them?

Target Audience: Elderly Crisis: Pandemic/ serious events(e.g. Natural disaster, political activities)

My team decided to focus on the elderly as our primary target group as we want to help them be socially active in the community even if they might have physical or language barriers.

What it does

Our app is a platform where users can look at the different community events held both online and offline and register for it with a click of a button. Our app filters the events based on the users' needs (preferred languages) to ensure they will have the best experience at the event. We also provide an integrated map for directions to the location and even a wheelchair accessibility route for wheelchair bound users to promote inclusivity. For users who are unfamiliar with joining online meetings, our app provides instructions, for the various online platform, to help users navigate to the meeting. We also provide the meeting link and ID for easier usage.

How we built it

We used Figma to visualize how our app will look like and Python for back-end. We used MS Excel for sample size data.

Challenges we ran into

We had to refine some of our original idea to ensure it answers the problem statement directly. We also had some time constraints and our project would have been more detailed and well construct if we had more time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to use parts of everyone's ideas and implement solutions to most of the details in the problem statements using our project.

What we learned

We learned how to better work as a team and ensure proper collaboration among everyone to provide a good and feasible idea. We also learnt how to integrate part of everyone's ideas and the importance of teamwork and work allocation when doing a group project.

What's next for ElderConnect

1. Add a larger variety of languages for users to pick from
2. Use AI to identify events that are more relevant to the user so their feed will be more suitable
3. Allow users to connect with people outside of their contacts to promote larger community network
