Inspiration
Travel apps remember destinations, but often forget the person traveling. We built Elastra for travelers whose accessibility, safety, and mobility needs can determine whether a journey is genuinely possible—not merely convenient.
What it does
Elastra is a memory-aware California travel companion. It remembers wheelchair accessibility, nighttime safety preferences, EV charging needs, previous decisions, and recent feedback. When conditions change, such as a wildfire alert, it retrieves the most relevant memories and produces personalized, hands-free guidance.
How we built it
We used Mastra for the agent framework and Elasticsearch as the memory and retrieval layer. Elasticsearch combines semantic and keyword search, while time decay helps newer feedback outweigh outdated preferences. Our live comparison asks the same question to a memory-blind agent and a memory-aware agent, with the reasoning visible in Mastra Studio.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was deciding which memories should matter most. Older preferences can conflict with newer feedback, so retrieval could not rely only on semantic similarity. We added time-aware ranking and structured memory types to prioritize current accessibility and safety requirements.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working, live A/B demonstration where memory materially changes the answer. Elastra recalls accessibility, nighttime safety, EV charging, and recent feedback, rejects unsuitable options, explains why, and presents a concise voice briefing.
What we learned
Agent memory is more than storing conversation history. Useful memory requires retrieval, ranking, recency, and the ability to recognize when new information supersedes old decisions. We also learned that transparent traces make an agent’s recommendations easier to understand and trust.
What's next for Elastra
Next, we would connect Elastra to verified real-time wildfire, road, weather, charging, and accessibility data. We would also add caregiver sharing, proactive alerts, multilingual voice briefings, and privacy controls so travelers decide exactly what Elastra remembers.
