Why We Created Eko
Fashion is one of the biggest polluters, yet most of us don’t have the time or tools to figure out which brands are truly sustainable. Greenwashing is everywhere—fancy eco-friendly claims with little proof.
We asked ourselves:
What if you could scan a product and instantly see its environmental and ethical impact?
That’s how Eko was born—a simple, smart way to shop responsibly.
What We Learned
Along the way, we discovered:
- Many brands aren’t transparent about their materials and ethical practices.
- Some fabrics are marketed as “green” but have hidden environmental costs.
- Certifications like GOTS and OEKO-TEX help—but they’re not always easy to find.
- Shoppers want quick, clear insights, not a research project before every purchase.
How Eko Works
Eko is designed to be fast, simple, and insightful. Here’s how it helps:
- Scan or Paste a Link – Users can scan a QR code or paste a product link to check sustainability details.
- Extract Key Info – Eko pulls details like materials, care instructions, and certifications from the product page.
- Fill in the Gaps – If some info is missing, we use trusted databases to make the best estimate.
- Score the Product – Based on its materials, labor conditions, and transparency, Eko gives a clear Impact & Wellness score.
- Show Meaningful Insights – Users see an easy-to-read breakdown, including why a product is sustainable—or not.
Challenges We Faced
- Brands Hide or Omit Info – Many fashion brands don’t disclose everything. To solve this, we created a smart system that fills in missing details using reliable sources.
- Too Much Data, Not Enough Clarity – Sustainability can be overwhelming. Our goal was to simplify the information so anyone can understand it at a glance.
- Scoring Fairly – Not all sustainable choices are black and white. We worked hard to make sure our scoring system is clear, balanced, and actually useful.
What’s Next
This is just the beginning. We plan to:
- Expand beyond one or two brands and support more fashion retailers.
- Improve our accuracy with smarter data extraction.
- Suggest better alternatives when a product isn’t sustainable.
