Inspiration
Ekholux LV1 was inspired by the question: What happens to humanity when language fails? Our team wanted to create a VR experience where players navigate a world reshaped by the collapse of meaning—where motion, sound, and instinct replace words. Influenced by experimental animation, sound art, and extreme-sports embodiment, we set out to merge high-speed Esports with surreal sound-based puzzles inside a fractured virtual afterlife.
What it does
Ekholux LV1 combines two core gameplay—Extreme Esport and Audio-Driven Environmental Puzzles—into one coherent narrative world. Players fly, dive, and rail-surf through massive brutalist ruins, while solving puzzles by reflecting ekho capsules off custom geometry to activate structures or reveal memories. The world is filled with looping “Ekho” beings, fragments of human consciousness replaying their final 10 seconds, guiding or obstructing the player.
How we built it
We developed Ekholux LV1 using Unity XR, custom locomotion physics, Meta Quest performance profiling, and a modular puzzle system built around sound propagation and reflective surfaces. Our team designed a layered narrative structure, procedural lighting for large ruin-spaces, and a hybrid movement controller that balances freedom, speed, and comfort. We also built an internal toolset for the ekho capsule logic, Ekho behavior scripting, and memory-fragment cutscenes.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing high-speed movement with VR comfort.
- Creating puzzles with simple core rules but deep combinational possibilities.
- Optimizing large-scale architecture for standalone Quest hardware.
- A fully integrated mission flow that unifies traversal, puzzles, and narrative into a coherent LV1 experience.
- Storytelling without heavy text or UI—using sound, ruins, and environment as narrative carriers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully realized new version of Ekholux LV1, expanding the project into a complete, content-rich Level 1 experience. This new build features:
- A new internal toolchain that streamlines level design, Ekho scripting, and puzzle iteration across the project.
- A redesigned sound-based puzzle system, introducing physical, intuitive Ekho capsule interactions and expanded geometry-driven mechanics.
- A high-speed Esports locomotion model rebuilt for stability, responsiveness, and dramatically lower motion sickness.
- A fully reimagined world, with a deeper atmosphere and a complete new suite of layered visual and audio storytelling tools.
- A strengthened art direction blending brutalism, ruin-tech aesthetics, and dream-like memory fragments into a cohesive visual identity.
What we learned
We learned how to refine VR comfort without sacrificing speed, how to convey narrative through space and audio instead of dialogue, and how to build puzzle mechanics that scale in complexity without increasing player burden. We also deepened our workflow for cross-platform optimization and playtest-driven iteration.
What's next for Ekholux LV1
- More new chapters that advance the story, introduce new environments, and integrate Esports and puzzle gameplay in fresh, narrative-driven ways.
- A major expansion to the puzzle system, adding new mechanics, new interactions, sound-based tools, a broader range of mission structures, and multi-stage challenge sequences.
- Evolving Esports gameplay, including customizable tracks, new movement variations, and increased freedom for players to craft their own high-speed routes.
- A refined comfort mode with additional accessibility presets to support a broader range of VR players.
- New biomes and architectural styles exploring more of the Ekholux universe.
