Inspiration

How do you turn all that information you want or need to learn into something you can actually understand? The crazy thing is that learning resources are more accessible than ever. Still, the issue is not the lack of learning resources but how many platforms lack targeted personalization that adapts to a learner's learning styles and needs. For example, we have personally faced language barriers, which are an often overlooked common barrier to education, with UNESCO reporting that 40% of the global population does not access education in a language they understand, highlighting a vital need for personalized, adaptive learning solutions. Studies have also shown that AI-powered adaptive learning programs can improve student test scores by up to 62%, demonstrating the potential of tailored, technology-enhanced approaches to boost learning outcomes.

We wanted to make Egg-ucate Me bridge this learning gap, offering a centralized platform and interactive experience beyond simple text generation for learning. Our goal is to make knowledge accessible and customized for each user, regardless of age or language.

What it does

Egg-ucate Me is a comprehensive learning platform that adapts to each user's unique needs, focusing on personalization and usability. Users can upload lecture recordings, videos, or PDFs, and the platform goes beyond static summaries by offering tools designed to engage users actively. It generates adaptive flashcards and personalized quizzes that align with the user's progress and learning style. Egg-ucate Me also integrates transcripts for easy navigation and Google Translate to make materials accessible in multiple languages. Its focus on turning passive study into active, tailored engagement sets it apart, ensuring every user gets a uniquely practical learning experience.

How we built it

For the frontend, we used React to create a dynamic and responsive interface, along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for styling and interaction. The backend is powered by Python, using AI technologies such as NLP for intelligent data processing. We are also using different APIs for Speech-to-text and for generating content (through GenAI) while saving everything to MongoDB Atlas. We also integrate APIs for smooth communication between the frontend and backend, enabling real-time updates and enhancing user experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of our first challenges was creating a solution for the theme of students. We scanned current products in the market for student learning and found a gap between accessible resources and personalized learning. Designing adaptive flashcards and interactive tools that felt intuitive and useful for diverse learners took more thought and time than expected. However, what was worse was getting the front-end and back-end to work together, and I would rather not get into that, but I'll just say we did not sleep. Even so, these challenges pushed us to stay focused on our mission.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re incredibly proud of how we approached and implemented the designs for Egg-ucate Me. From brainstorming to execution, we focused on creating an intuitive and user-friendly interface that could cater to learners of all ages and backgrounds. The journey taught us a lot—not just about the technical challenges of building such a platform but also about the importance of teamwork and persistence. Every team member brought their unique strengths, and it was through collaboration and sheer effort that we managed to accomplish so much in a short period of time. While we weren’t able to get the final product fully functional, the experience of exploring this idea and pushing ourselves to innovate made it a worthwhile project. It’s a testament to what we can achieve together, and we’re excited about the potential it holds for the future.

What we learned

  1. Communication, communication, communication. Being sleepy and locked in can make you easily forget you’re working in a group. Teamwork makes the dream work!
  2. Do not think that 36 hours is a lot of time, we underestimated how much time we needed to work on the backend!
  3. Take breaks! Sometimes you don’t know you need one until you take one.

What's next for Egg-ucate Me

We plan to expand Egg-ucate Me's capabilities to make it even more versatile and impactful. Our next steps include adding support for eBooks and PowerPoint files and developing adaptive learning paths that adjust to user performance. We also aim to introduce voice recognition and text-to-speech tools to enhance accessibility for hands-free learning. In the long term, we envision partnering with educational institutions to make Egg-ucate Me a trusted resource for students and teachers worldwide. By continuously refining its features, we aim to redefine what personalized, active learning looks like in the future.
