Inspiration

The global pandemic has undoubtedly changed the very fundamentals of our lifestyle. Right from working on presentations to catching up with friends, everything has been shifted online. The field of Education and learning is no exception to this. While researching the given problem domains of GARUDA HACK 2020, it occurred to us that the education sector in Indonesia lacks behind the current world trends. Despite being the world's 4th largest education system, schools in Indonesia are not able to allocate and use resources to the best of their abilities. The poor performance can be associated with some of the reasons below:

  1. Inexperienced teaching faculties.
  2. Use of traditional paper-pencil approach instead of web applications and smart devices.
  3. A higher number of schools drop out students at a very young age.
  4. Unequal distribution of teaching resources to people from all sectors of society.
  5. Poor payment schemes for teachers.

Many NGOs and young innovators have taken steps to tackle this problem. Herein we are proposing “Edwise: A school management system with cross-platform learning features” to promote a wholesome learning experience to everyone.

What it does

As mentioned above, Edwise is a school management system which caters to the needs of teachers, students as well as the school management departments thereby ensuring a holistic product development approach. The interface supports three kinds of profiles to log in:

  1. Admin
  2. Student
  3. Teacher

The features of an admin include:

  1. Conventional teacher management system. This helps the admin to keep track of teacher’s development over the period of time, which in turn ensures the teaching faculty is continuously updated with the current world technology. Thus ensuring a rise in teaching standards
  2. Scheduling the cross-platform lectures/ guest lectures. Here the website will give an analysis of the areas/ subjects your school is performing in a poor manner. The website will then suggest lectures from guest speakers/lecturers to ensure good teaching practices from all parts of world are made available to students.

*Using the teacher login facility, the teacher can: *

  1. Keep a track on the lecture schedule.
  2. Update her profile continuously to keep in the teaching and learning cycle.
  3. Hold cross platform lectures/ guest lectures.

Using a Student login:

  1. Enroll in different online courses from integrated platforms as well as he/she can keep a list of free learning resources. Reminders regarding due online course assignments are also provided
  2. Students can connect with their school teachers/ guest lecturers using the “ask your teacher” feature to clarify their queries.
  3. Get reminders of their quizzes, assignments, deadlines, for school activities etc.
  4. Keep a record of their Marks and have an analysis report on their subject-wise shortcomings.

How we built it

The first phase of our development process was researching the problems faced by the education system. This was followed by the designing process and prototype development cycle. We tried and tested the development process on :

  1. HTML & CSS scratch coding. (scraped the idea due to complex coding process)
  2. FIGMA (finalized)

Challenges we ran into

This was our first Major League Hackathon, as a matter of fact our very first hackathon. We were clearly lacking experience yet were determined to build a solution. As mentioned above we tried our luck in scratch coding but failed to develop on it due to lack of coding experience. After deciding and developing our prototype on FIGMA we came across the fact that FIGMA is only a prototyping tool with some low fidelity design access. However, with the help of our mentors and advice from fellow hackers we developed a clickable website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the product that we built despite the lack of experience. We were able to finish our design after contrast hindrances in the development cycle. Thanks to the advice from mentors and fellow hackers that we made it!! Apart from this we also networked with some amazing people. Looking forward to more such events!

What we learned

One thing for sure! We are leaving this hackathon with immense knowledge and experience on speed prototyping. We learnt how we need to adapt to situations and alter our solution in a product development cycle.

What's next for Edwise

We are looking forward to the LAUNCH PAD initiative to get some mentorship on our plans and polish our idea for a market ready product. Thanks to all the organizers who patiently answered all our queries! Looking forward to more events.
