Inspiration

I was inspired by Art and Builds made in Minecraft. I was also inspired by the models that students of my University's Architecture department had on display at an art exhibition.

What it does

It makes available to people an entire Virtual world that they can build or change according to their whims and express themselves and their ideas. It gives them the building blocks and the space to play with them.

How we built it

We started with sharing ideas of essential things that would be required to give people the ability to create freely and and express themselves without any limitations. We selected the game engine Ursina because it had a lot of helpful functions inbuilt. Then we moved onto making the block textures for our demo. The flat world just seemed too plain so we decided to use noise in order to create unique and varied terrain each time a world is loaded. At last we tried to implement some other features that would help with the creative process.

Challenges we ran into

The first and biggest challenge was trying to find a game engine that would provide us with all the functions needed and fortunately I think I found just the right one. The second challenge was having to create textures for the blocks and we tried our best to find or make the models and textures.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The Game performs exceptionally well on even old retro hardware(I would know since I wrote and ran the code on my 16-year old laptop with no GPU) and is very lite. The worlds are fully customizable and we are very proud of that.

What we learned

We learned about how Game Engines are like in General Purpose Programming Languages and the wide variety of things that they can be used for. We also learned about the different aspects of the Game Development process and how much thought really goes into making something like Minecraft.

What's next for EduVR

We have decided to add some more features and a UI that would help the creators like screen capture, streaming, and also voice automated accessibility for persons with disabilities. Overall, keeping in mind the short amount of time we had, we are really happy with what we made and are excited for others to try it out too.
