Inspiration

We were very interested in the prospect of giving business and the public the tools to efficiently interpret government data and APIs, making them simple and easy to use for both. Businesses can focus on where to invest their resources in for better education and parents can make wise decisions on where to let their sons and daughters learn.

What it does

The app gets many datasets from official government sources, parses them, and improves on them, providing an easy to use interface for accessing education data.

How I built it

I built it using various web technologies, including:

  • HTML5,
  • CSS,
  • JS,
  • Python/Flask,
  • JSON,
  • Google Maps API

  • Gov't APIs from the Statistics Institute of Puerto Rico, and various other tools I created for interpeting, parsing, and organizing API data.

Challenges I ran into

The datasets were mostly incomplete and I had to build many parsers and mergers, and spent much time looking for relationships within the data to efficiently merge them and interpret the results in a user friendly interface.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Building custom parsers for our datasets. Merging various unrelated datasets.

What I learned

I learned many concepts related to API centric apps and data science.

What's next for eduview

I plan to refactor most of its codebase and improve upon it, rewriting some mission critical parts for even further efficiency and data retrieval. I also hope to be able to open up more APIs for public consumption.
