EduOrbit: Verified, Scholarship-Aware Global Education Matching
Your Guide to Global Education: Moving students from profiles to verified, funding-feasible pathways with total transparency.
đź’ˇ Inspiration
Finding study-abroad opportunities is completely fragmented. Students currently bounce between dozens of tabs—comparing institutional requirements, trying to decipher complex funding conditions, guessing whether they are actually eligible, and missing critical deadlines.
Worse yet, existing platforms and AI tools often present generic or misleading information, hiding the fact that students are discovering tuition feasibility after spending time and money on applications. We built EduOrbit to fix this broken discovery loop by shifting the paradigm from unverified search to deterministic, rule-based matching backed by a verifiable audit trail.
⚙️ What It Does
EduOrbit is a verified decision system designed specifically for international students navigating universities and scholarships. Its core features include:
- Student Profile & Onboarding Wizard: Collects critical academic filters (GPA on proper scales, nationality, residency, field, and budget constraints) directly mapped to eligibility rules.
- Deterministic Matching Engine: Evaluates student profiles against hard eligibility rules (PASS, FAIL, UNKNOWN) before any presentation layer or AI runs. No hallucinations, no false hope.
- Verified Scholarship & University Corpus: Every single listing features explicit verification timestamps, direct source links, and clear rule breakdowns.
- Actionable Shortlists & Reminders: Students can save programs, track statuses, and set timezone-aware deadline reminders.
- Trust & Verification Workflow: An admin-backed review loop ensures stale data, incorrect info reports, and outdated deadlines are actively managed with immutable audit logs.
🛠️ How We Built It
EduOrbit was engineered following a production-grade architecture designed for strict security and data integrity:
- Frontend & Architecture: Built with Next.js 16.3.x (App Router), TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS 4.3, structured as a clean modular monolith separating server-side DAL (Data Access Layer), domain rules, and UI components.
- Database & Persistence: Powered by MongoDB Atlas using explicit document structures, compound indexes, and Zod boundary validation to guarantee data consistency.
- Security & Reliability: Features server-side ownership checks, robust authorization boundaries, least-privilege DB access, and strict separation of sensitive configuration.
- AI Integration (Grounded Only): AI is restricted strictly to a natural language explanation layer running over pre-computed deterministic results—ensuring the AI never invents eligibility facts.
🚧 Challenges We Ran Into
- Rule Complexity vs. Flexibility: Balancing complex, multi-variable scholarship rules (e.g., combined nationality, GPA equivalency scales, and specific field constraints) without overwhelming the database query layer required a hybrid embedded rule schema.
- Combating Hallucination Trust: Ensuring that AI enhancements never overstep deterministic rule outcomes. We solved this by enforcing a hard architectural boundary where rules evaluate first, and language adapters only format text based on immutable evaluation states.
- Data Freshness & Verification: Designing an admin review queue and public-facing "last-verified" timestamp mechanism that prevents stale scholarship data from misleading students.
🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Trust-First Architecture: Creating a product where every single result comes with an explicit evidence trail and official source link.
- Clean Modular Monolith Design: Maintaining a strict separation of concerns between domain rules, security policies, and client presentation, making the codebase clean and ready for real-world production scaling.
- Real-World Relevance: Designing a targeted solution addressing concrete pain points faced by international applicants (specifically tailored around financial feasibility and South Asian student mobility insights).
📚 What We Learned
- Deterministic Rules > Generative Guesswork: In high-stakes domains like education and funding, users value accuracy and predictability far more than flashy chat features.
- Data Provenance is a Product Feature: Treating verification dates and source URLs as first-class citizens drastically transforms user trust.
