It's becoming harder for teachers to mark hundreds of students work within their limited free time hours that they should be using for leisure. It was reported in March 2021 that 84% of teachers feel stressed, which is a shocking realization when these are the people who are supposed to be comforting and teaching the next generation. This is why we created EduMe.ai

This project is especially useful as it allows for moderated grades throughout schools without any bias. Therefore, if needed it is an effective tool to be used if homework based assessment grades need to be assigned.

What is EduMe.ai

EduMe.ai is a social media-based application that aims to connect students and reduce workload for teachers. We identified our problem as teachers being overstressed in their work-life through increasingly complex homework load as well as limited work-life balance. Therefore, we wanted to solve this.

We do this by using AI to mark student's homework as well as invigilate online tests. In addition to this, we have created a platform that allows students to communicate privately and share public posts of their work, lives or interests.

Automatic essay grading

Essays are paramount for of assessing academic excellence along with linking the different ideas with the ability to recall but are notably time-consuming when they are assessed manually. Manual grading takes a significant amount of evaluator's time and hence it is an expensive process.

Artificial Intelligence systems provide a lot to the educational community where graders have to face different kinds of difficulties while rating student writings. Analyzing student essays in abundance within given time limit, along with feedback is a challenging task. But with changing times, human-written (not handwritten) essays are easy to evaluate with the help of AEG systems.

Facial recognition

Face detection using Haar cascades is a machine learning-based approach where a cascade function is trained with a set of input data. OpenCV already contains many pre-trained classifiers for face, eyes, smiles, etc.. Today we will be using the face classifier. You can experiment with other classifiers as well.

We used google cloud Vision API that can detect and extract text from images. There are two annotation features that support optical character recognition (OCR).

To start our project properly, we decided to create a rough plan of what we wanted and where in order to visualize the outcome of the project. Here are a few pictures of what we designed using Figma.

How are we a social media application?

The Google definition of social media "websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking."

We designed our application in a way that allows students to connect through an experience they mutually share - school. We would class our project as social media as it does allow students to talk and spark conversations whilst, having the freedom to post whatever they want that entails their education.

How does this impact society?

Teachers are arguably the largest group of individuals who make social change. However, with their mental health declining and education gradually becoming harder and more competitive, efficiency and productivity are just not the same as they used to be. We hope, to bring back this productivity via taking work of teacher's hands and creating a centralized place for marking and moderated communication between students.

We are happy that we were able to complete this highly complex project within the limited time-space. We truly believe that our project has huge potential to create a new era of education that helps teachers with their work-life balance as well as helping students to give advice to each other and help each other out.

What's next for EduMe.ai

Our system has a lot of versatility but to even start effectively in the future, we plan to implement our system virtually into small schools to see its effects on student progress as well as teacher's mental health. We also plan to make our application a safer place by filtering comments to make sure that no bullying or rude language takes place as it is a tool that is made for school children.
