Inspiration
Students often find scholarships through scattered portals, university websites, and social media, but still struggle to understand one key question: “How will I close my actual education funding gap?” We built EduFund to turn disconnected opportunities into a clear, personalized funding plan.
What it does
EduFund is an AI-guided education funding workspace that helps students:
- Build a profile using course, CGPA scale, location, income range, achievements, and funding need.
- Discover curated opportunities from official programme sources.
- Screen opportunities using course, academic, income, location, and eligibility signals.
- Calculate the student’s education funding gap.
- Rank opportunities using expected value, match, and deadline urgency.
- Show a Funding Confidence Meter with confirmed, probable, possible, and uncovered funding.
- Prepare document checklists and application drafts.
- Check essay claims against the student’s saved profile.
- Identify reusable documents across applications.
- Detect deadline collisions and track application progress.
- Keep the student in control of final review and external submission.
How we built it
We built EduFund as a full-stack web application.
- React and Vite power the responsive student interface.
- FastAPI provides the backend API.
- SQLite stores accounts, profiles, opportunities, and application progress.
- A modular agent architecture handles Profile, Discovery, Eligibility, Funding Planning, Application Autopilot, and Deadline Tracking.
- The opportunity catalogue links students to official provider sources.
- The interface supports global country selection and CGPA scales out of 4, 5, or 10. Challenges we ran into
- Real scholarship information changes frequently, so we designed the platform to direct students to official sources for final verification.
- Different countries and universities use different CGPA systems, so we added 4, 5, and 10-point scales and normalized them for eligibility checks.
- Scholarship applications require many repeated documents with different naming conventions.
- AI-generated essays can include unsupported claims, so we added an Evidence Checker to flag claims that are not present in the student profile.
- It was important to make automation helpful without allowing unsafe automatic submission of financial or personal information.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built an end-to-end funding journey from account creation to a ready-to-review application packet.
- Added real opportunity records with official source links instead of relying only on placeholder listings.
- Created a Funding Confidence Meter that explains uncertainty instead of promising awards.
- Added Document Reuse Map and Deadline Collision Detector features to reduce repeated work.
- Built an Essay Evidence Checker that promotes honest, profile-supported applications.
- Designed the platform around human approval: EduFund prepares, but students make final submission decisions.
- Created a global-ready profile system with country selection and flexible CGPA scales. What we learned
- Students need prioritization more than they need more search results.
- Transparency matters in financial planning. Showing uncertainty builds more trust than presenting every opportunity as guaranteed.
- Responsible AI needs clear limits, especially around financial aid applications and personal documents.
- A strong product flow connects data collection, decision support, and practical action.
- Good UI design matters because students may already feel overwhelmed by funding decisions.
What's next for EduFund
- Add scheduled verification of scholarship deadlines and official source updates.
- Expand the worldwide opportunity catalogue with more country-specific programmes.
- Add multilingual support for students from different regions.
- Improve document analysis with secure OCR and expiry-date reminders.
- Add institution and advisor dashboards with student consent controls.
- Support country-specific currencies, income formats, and academic grading systems.
- Add scholarship recommendation explanations with more detailed eligibility reasoning.
- Measure outcomes such as applications completed, deadlines met, and funding secured.
