Inspiration

It all started when our member, Raveka, enrolled to a public high school. Meanwhile, Kelly, is in a private school. We are good friends for a long time, and even to this day we still are still in contact with each other. Some things are different from us, but one that stands out the most is our high schools. Private school's quality of education far exceeds public schools. And it is saddening to see the quality of students that is far, far, far different from private schools. To give a picture, 1 out of 36 students would rather cheat in an exam with high security, be it from the various tech the school uses, or when the teachers step down and look out for themselves. This doesn't happen to the first grades themselves - almost everyone is doing it and have no shame in doing so. They have no fear of getting caught whatsoever. At least, in Raveka's school, most students she knows are working to make ends meet, instead of studying. Most extracurriculars are shut down because the lack of fund to pay for the tutors (that is also an adult and a teacher). Most teachers are not reliable either, and the students end up studying independently. So how do the students with limited resources study? They won't initiate to find it themselves without a community that supports them. And this problem has been ongoing after all these years, with no significant progress. One of the hidden part of our world is many people, especially children and teenagers aren't being educated enough. Reasons coming to many complicated things, such as many schools have been closed and destroyed, parents who couldn't afford the tuition fees, unable to follow the school's lessons, lack of discipline and facilities from the system. With everything presented above, we decided to team up to solve this problem. Since, we are from different schools with different experiences. We can help each other out with the knowledge we have. And thus, we initiated an idea to create a tool that helps students from various groups.

What it does

StudyKit is an app that helps students to study effectively. From just your own phone, you can create your own guides and playlists for studying. It is user friendly and most features do not need internet to have it work. You can also share those playlists to anyone all over the globe! StudyKit is a place with a community that builds, safe and trustable to help with your effective studying journey.

  1. Edit Your Study Kit where you can create your own study playlist. This application provides user to adding notes, whiteboard for scribbling, folders to add photos and videos, Youtube videos, news, and articles by inputting a link to the folder that has been provided. User can save materials that has been arranged by StudyKit. User can create more study kits, search to add and use other people's study kit. This way, a lot of students can exchange materials easily.
  2. Study Group where the application provides a group chat to study, discuss, and exchange materials. The scale of the group is international, so you can get to know materials from foreigner countries. Not only the user's insight increases, but also user will have more networking since the user interacted with many people. User can create their own study group, join other's people study group, and share the user's study group to other users.
  3. Work Place -Where user can collect academic (main study subject) and non-academic (extracurricular) material. For the academic, we provide all of the materials from the user's grade. We can add more main study subjects that we are interested in. For non-academic, it provides you the material and practical example. User can add their insights as well for non-academic. Quizzes are also available, for online (live playing) or offline. The offline feature is very helpful for regions with low connection.
  4. Community We offer our social feature that is called “chat”, and you can use it to chat with your friends and get to know other people. For other people, we provide you user recommendations with different categories, like people that have the same interest as you! Through this, you can join all kinds of different communities from around the world. You can create your own community too!
  5. Editing your profile You can edit your username and profile picture, and also add credentials. Your account is public to be seen by other people if you share your StudyKit. For credentials, it is there so the users can use it to review other people's accounts, and evaluate it.
  6. Personalize your UI Who doesn't like to personalize? As students ourselves, we would love to have a tool that we can suit to our own preferences. StudyKit can change the app's UI color with 8 available colors.

How we built it

We built it with Figma. Figma is an easy tool to create something sophisticated while having minimum coding. First, we created the base and layout designs in figma, such as the shapes and texts. Then, we made a decision that our theme will be space to make it more interesting. We started to add a background for the UI design and we added some elements from canva, so that student won't get bored with our design. We chose multiple elements, arrange them thoroughly (so we can crop it later in figma), then exported it as a transparent png. Portions of layouts and designs were made evenly by us , because we switched roles at the middle of road.

Challenges we ran into

With zero coding skills, we decided to use Figma. Our member, Raveka, has never used it before, so in the beginning it was quite the challenge. Because of it, we also had difficulties with communicating our ideas. We were kind of hopeless, but decided to just wing it and to have fun by the end of the day. Over the hours of constant brainstorming and learning, we finally got through it and broke the barrier of being unable to use and coordinate within the app. By the end of the hours, which was kind of nearing to the deadline, we were able to assign portions of work to each of us and began to trust each others skills. This helped us to persist and add more features as we like, because, we are basically on the same vision now.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

That we joined this hackathon and to be able to share our ideas. Also, we learned more about problem-solving in a team, because we had to face some problems either our devices or the UI design. We had several different ideas which almost lead us to conflict. However we manage to overcome it properly. We agreed that the app we made could have a big potential for students all over the world especially in Indonesia.

What we learned

Brainstorming and working as a team. It is really impactful for us since we are from different schools. We are so happy to be able to overcome the obstacles. We also learned to enjoy the process instead, and this helped us to stay positive while working on our app rather than being under pressure.

What's next for StudyKit

We have a lot of ideas for this one! We want to expand the functionality of StudyKit even larger. We, as students, would really love it if there was a mega app that is free of charge and trustable. We want to eventually create features that can help schools, be it from the privileged to the region with little to no internet at all. But that does not mean we'll abandon the features for students! We have updates in mind such as pomodoro timer, a widget that works outside of the app to help take notes etc, graph calculator and more! creating sustainable servers are a must for schools to use and to develop their own web. They could use it for exams (with anti cheat and great security system, so the students grades won't be affected) or to make a place where you can submit your projects. We want our app to be a part of our students life, where they learn how to hone their skills, develop effective study method and grow with the community that accepts and build them. We believe, that all students from all over the world should and MUST get a free, good quality education. There will be students out there using this app, looking to help other students, and with that, road to a better future can be constructed.
