EduBridge: Accessible Learning for All
Inspiration
Traditional learning tools often overlook accessibility needs, making it hard for neurodivergent individuals—especially those with ADHD—to focus, retain, and engage with material. We wanted to create a platform that makes learning easier, more interactive, and fun by leveraging GenAI to adapt content to different learning styles.
What it does
EduBridge transforms learning by:
- Converting text or uploaded files into engaging, easy-to-understand AI-generated videos.
- Providing a built-in Pomodoro session timer to help users maintain focus. Once timer is off, mini activity pop-up is provided (quick exercise, pop quiz or even a mini game).
- Offering background sounds (white noise, brown noise, etc.) for an optimal study environment.
- Assisting with structured note-taking by breaking content into chunks for active recall games, mini-quizzes, or memory-friendly notes.
- Featuring an Accessibility Button at the bottom right that allows users to adjust contrast, text size, saturation, dyslexia-friendly fonts, and more for a personalized experience.
Currently, our focus is on supporting ADHD learners, but the platform is designed to expand for other accessibility needs in the future.
How we built it
- Frontend: React.js with Tailwind CSS for a clean and responsive UI.
- Backend: Python to handle API requests and data processing.
- Database: Firebase Firestore used for real-time storage of user preferences, notes, and progress tracking. (would be added)
- GenAI Integration: Google Gemini API for generating easy-to-understand, engaging video explanations and breaking down content into ADHD-friendly chunks.
- Speech-to-Text: Google Cloud Speech-to-Text API for transcribing uploaded audio files, making content more accessible.
- Text-to-Speech: Google Cloud Text-to-Speech to convert generated content into spoken explanations.
- Video Generation: OpenAI for converting text-based explanations into short, visually engaging AI-generated videos.
- Background Sounds: Pixabay for white noise, brown noise, and other focus-enhancing sounds.
- Accessibility Features: React-Accessibility package + custom implementations for an Accessibility Button allowing users to adjust contrast, text size, dyslexia-friendly fonts, and more. (would be added)
Challenges we ran into
- Designing an interface that balances simplicity with accessibility.
- Ensuring AI-generated videos remain concise, engaging, and accurate.
- Implementing adaptive note-taking methods that effectively assist users.
- Fine-tuning background sound options to cater to different focus needs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating an intuitive learning platform designed with accessibility in mind.
- Successfully integrating AI to generate dynamic, ADHD-friendly learning materials.
- Implementing interactive study tools that make learning fun and effective.
What we learned
Throughout the development of EduBridge, we gained a deeper understanding of how to design an accessible, neurodivergent-friendly learning experience.
- ADHD-Friendly Learning Techniques: We explored evidence-based strategies like chunking information, active recall, and multisensory learning (visual, auditory, and interactive elements) to make studying more engaging.
- Gamification & Stimulation Balance: We learned how to balance engaging elements (like AI-generated videos and quizzes) without overwhelming users with distractions.
- Focus Optimization: Implementing tools like Pomodoro timers, white noise generators, and low-stimulation UI options helped us create a structured yet flexible learning environment.
- Accessibility Best Practices: We incorporated customizable text sizes, dyslexia-friendly fonts, contrast adjustments, and saturation controls to enhance usability for different needs.
- Leveraging GenAI Effectively: We optimized AI-generated content to be concise, interactive, and ADHD-friendly, ensuring the output is engaging rather than overwhelming.
This project helped us bridge the gap between AI, accessibility, and education, and we’re excited to keep improving it!
What's next for EduBridge
- Expanding support for other neurodivergent and disabled learners.
- Adding more interactive learning modes, such as gamified lessons.
- Implementing personalized AI tutors that adapt to each user's study style.
- Enhancing the platform with real-time collaboration and shared study spaces.
