Enrollment in primary education in developing countries has reached 91% but 6 out of 10 children and adolescents are not achieving a minimum level of proficiency in reading and math.
UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring Report mentions that professional learning communities are an accountability approach that has helped increase teacher's pedagogical and content knowledge, with associated changes in practice.
The 2030 SDG's agenda spotlights teachers as the cornerstore of progress in education and learning. In order to empower teachers we built Edubot, a chatbot that fosters peer to peer mentorship as a proxy to improve the quality of education.
What it does
Through a very short conversation, this chatbot is capable of matching mentors and mentees to start a mentorship program.
How we built it
The creation process was:
- We make a research about all the problems related to the SDGs.
- We decided to improve the quality of education (SDG4).
- Teachers are very important in the education field.
- We wanted to empower them and we found out that mentorship is proven to work in transferring knowledge
- We designed the chatbot flows and validated them with the SDG4 experts.
- We built EduBot through an iterative process.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to impact students first, but since there are age restrictions at facebook we couldn't design a bot for them, We opted to impact the professors. We had some difficulties making the algorithm for mentors and mentees matching.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Giving the teachers an opportunity to improve their knowledge and to connect with other peers in an easy way.
What we learned
There's a lot to do in this field, although the mentorship is proven to generate benefits, yet there aren't so much guidelines to implement a mentor program in the educational field (from teacher to teacher).
What's next for EduBot.me
Our vision is to impact first in the local communities and in the future we think we can catalyse international collaboration among teachers.
Users will tell, we hope to deliver value and helped them to foster their local education communities.
