EduAssistant

Inspiration

As students, we've all been there - drowning in dense lecture notes and textbook chapters, spending hours manually creating study materials. We built EduAssistant to solve this problem, creating an AI study assistant that transforms any educational document into powerful, interactive learning tools in seconds.

What it does

Upload any document (lecture notes, articles, book chapters), and our multi-agent AI system automatically:

  • Summarises content into key concepts and main ideas
  • Generates flashcards for effective memorisation
  • Creates quizzes to test your understanding
  • Extracts references and suggests further reading
  • Provides an AI tutor for interactive Q&A about the content

How we built it

Frontend: Clean, responsive interface using Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS with Shadcn UI components.

Backend: Python-based multi-agent system powered by Google's Gemini models. We designed a Manager Agent that orchestrates specialised agents:

  • SummarizerAgent handles content summarisation
  • QuizzesAgent generates assessments
  • FlashCardAgent creates study cards
  • ReferenceAgent extracts citations

Genkit manages the AI workflows, and everything's containerised with Docker for scalable deployment. Architecture Diagram

Challenges we ran into

Building a multi-agent AI system wasn't easy:

  • Agent coordination - Getting the Manager Agent to effectively delegate tasks and synthesize outputs
  • Prompt engineering - Crafting precise instructions took significant iteration to get consistently high-quality results
  • Frontend-backend integration - Creating robust API architecture to handle async requests and AI responses
  • State management - Making file uploads and AI processing feel seamless for users

What we're proud of

We successfully created a functional multi-agent system that actually works! Even better, we managed to hide all the complexity behind an intuitive interface - users just upload a file and get a complete study toolkit in seconds.

What's next

  • More content types - Support for lecture recordings, slides, and handwritten notes
  • Personalized learning - AI that tracks your performance and customizes future materials
  • Collaborative features - Share study sets with classmates
  • Enhanced tutoring - Proactive study planning and Socratic-style guidance

EduAssistant turns the tedious process of creating study materials into something that happens instantly, letting students focus on what matters most - actually learning.
