Inspiration

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the largest annual ticketed event in the world. However, with so many events to choose from, with varying reviews its difficult to know what to go to. Add to that the hundreds of tonnes of flyers, littering the streets, discarded by the passers by. The Fringe shies away from rating the shows - which doesn't help the audiences, who with limited time and budgets can feel like they don't get to see the best shows for them each year.

What it does

Our aim was that the user gets asked a series of questions , so they can get really personalised results - such as who their favourite comedians are, so we can perfectly match them to the shows that have similar characteristics and are on when they are free. Responses delivered by voice make for a fun conversational vibe.

How we built it

Using n8n we built a workflow into the Fringe Demo API and then integrated Minimax to deliver results via a web front end. We also intended integrating via Apify MCP Agent a TikTok scraper to provide further context on the recommendations.

Challenges we ran into

It was challenging integrating Minimax and getting it running. The API to Edinburgh Fringe was a demo and limited, so difficult the full range of data we required.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The idea is actually something that could be a viable business opportunity.

What we learned

That ChatGPT is good at reverse engineering API's when the documentation is unhelpful

What's next for Fringe Friend - Maximising your Fun at the Fringe

Continue to build it and update the UI with the potential to demo it to the Edinburgh Frings through existing contacts.
