Inspiration

We were inspired by our own struggles with mental health and our experiences with loved ones dealing with mental health crises. Seeing the rising number of cases was also extremely motivating, knowing that we could potentially be designing a solution that could be quickly implemented. Children and teenagers are two of the most vulnerable groups

Edgewood's mission resonated with us because they are passionate and open to expansive ideas, so we were eager to come up with a creative solution to their problem. They also aim to help underserved youth and youth of color in the Bay Area by providing crucial tools needed to cope with mental health needs, complex trauma, and anxiety.

What it does

The Edgewood app streamlines the onboarding and payment process for caretakers as well as provides resources to patients, complementary to clinical care. There is an immediate need for technology to bridge the need required by many families seeking care but are unable to obtain it due to long waitlists and required referrals. Our research shows that establishing care immediately and providing an easy way to do so is key to preventing further mental health deterioration. We designed this for all children, teenagers, and their caregivers in the Bay Area to spread awareness of Edgewood and their mission. Anyone who has a mobile device is able to access this app and establish care.

How we built it

As a team of designers, we used Figma to ideate what we thought was absolutely necessary for a new to market app for Edgewood. We want to cover the highest priorities first, which include establishing care and access to resources. Our focus is on UX strategy and design, using wireframing and prototyping.

We conducted research, brainstorming, and ideation in FigJam, then built our screens and prototype in Figma. We communicated on Discord and recorded/edited our video using Vimeo and Canva.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges was narrowing down our ideas to a workable concept that could be immediately implemented by Edgewood. Due to the time constraints, we were unable to conduct thorough research and user testing. We made up for this by brainstorming a multitude of ideas and outcomes. Since we do not have professional experience in mental healthcare, it was sometimes challenging to choose the correct terminology or tone. In order to make sure we were on the right track we used inspiration from current mental health resources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing a functional design within 24 hours, knowing that this design could potentially help children dealing with mental health crises. We were also able to begin the process of doing an overall re-brand of Edgewood. This included updating the logo, implementing a new color palette, and creating a mascot (Edgward!) for the chatbot function.

What we learned

Ideating is key to unleashing our creative thinking. We had a team of five people and all of us brought forth different skill sets and ways of thinking, which really opened up our conversations. It was the first hackathon for all of us so we didn’t know what to expect. Collaboration was so important while working in a virtual team since we all live in different cities and come from diverse backgrounds. Implementing was the most important task at hand and we found out that getting stuck in an idea was detrimental to time management. The time crunch was real and we reminded ourselves not to get caught up in too many details and just move forward.

What's next for Edgewood Mobile App

The possibilities are endless.
We would partner up with a development team to implement this and continue doing research to improve the usability and usefulness to our targeted audiences (children, teenagers, caregivers, and clinicians.) Ways we would do this include:

  • Current interface is simple enough for immediate implementation, while also making navigation straightforward for young users
  • Use Google Based tech stacks, Flutter and Firebase, and iOS programming languages React and Swift.
Add a bio of therapists so users can look through a directory and schedule a 15 minute consult to discover the right fit for them.
  • Add a screen that gives the opportunity to pay it forward for others who may need financial assistance
  • Since Edgewood is looking to rebrand in the near future, this app will complement their strategy and can be easily rebranded by adjusting our UI kit.
