Inspiration

I knew I wanted to create a small space game, so rather than having it be similar to asteroids where you're shooting things, I thought a zippy racing game would be fun.

What it does

The game has two modes - daily challenges and endless. The daily challenge is unique because every ship that crashes into a black hole increases the strength of the gravity in that area, for all players.

How we built it

The architecture and code was built entirely using Codex, mostly as an experiment. All of the gameplay design and ideas came from me. I had the service create a config file where almost every aspect of the game is a variable I can tweak, so everything about the game feel is fine-tuned by hand.

Challenges we ran into

There are a few bugs that I haven't been able to fix because of the limitations of AI, but it was still a very fun and worthwhile project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I wanted to spend a lot of time tweaking the audio aspects, so I also used codex to build a lightweight webpage to iterate on all of the Web Audio API values that were being used for the various sound effects and music.

What we learned

I had never worked in the Reddit developer environment before, or even looked at Games on Reddit, so I feel a lot more confident navigating those areas and understanding how they work.

What's next for Edge of the Drift

Art. I have an artist who wanted to participate but they weren't able to in the time frame, so my first goal will be to replace the assets with human-made ones. If the game gets a positive response and has regular players I have some ideas for more bespoke challenges and events, or even new game modes.
